De Niro Tops On Screen Deaths List

29 December 2010 6:56 AM, PST | Filmofilia | See recent Filmofilia news »

Robert De Niro has hit one more record! In a “horrifying” new study he has “died” on screen more than any other Hollywood star!

The long kiss goodnight. The big dirt nap. Kickin’ the toilet. Buying the farm. 187 (cop code in some countries)…”

There are so many urban names for death. Reaching the top of the Hollywood usually means you play the hero, get the girl, and ride into the sunset. But sometimes, you don’t even make it to the final fade out. Sometimes, you just have been put out of your misery. These guys have had maybe not the best but certainly the most death scenes on the film:

1. Robert De Niro (14 films)

Bloody Mama, Bang the Drum Slowly, Mean Streets, Brazil, The Mission, Cape Fear, This Boy’s Life, Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein , Heat, The Fan, Jackie Brown(high ranked), Great Expectations, 15 Minutes and Hide & Seek

Robert De Niro Tops List of Most Movie Deaths

27 December 2010 4:16 PM, PST | | See recent Worst Previews news »

ChaCha put together a list of actors who have died the most in their movies. Topping the list is Robert De Niro with fifteen deaths, including ones in "Cape Fear," "Frankenstein" and "Jackie Brown." Bruce Willis also made the list and was actually killed twice by his ex-wife Demi Moore in "Mortal Thoughts" and "Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle." Brad Pitt is in top ten as well, but his deaths are a bit odd. He died in "Cool World," but returned as an animated character. He died in "Fight Club," but never actually existed. And he died in "Meet Joe Black," but came back as Death. The list is far from perfect, since it doesn't include Leonardo DiCaprio (The Departed, Titanic, Blood Diamond), Kevin Spacey (Se7en, American Beauty, La Confidential), Samuel L. Jackson (Deep Blue Sea, True Romance, Jurassic Park), or John Travolta (Pulp Fiction, Face/Off, The Punisher). Plus, there »

Spider-Man Musical Accidents, Brittany Murphy And Winter Weather In Today's Twitter-Wood

21 December 2010 2:03 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Accidents abounded today as news of a mishap at the Broadway musical "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark" spread and winter weather caused some mayhem. Tom Felton, for instance, has been having a bad run of driving luck, but it does sound like he's okay.

Yesterday marked a sad anniversary, too, as Rose McGowan noted that it's been one year since Brittany Murphy's death. Her thoughts, as well as a shot of one of our favorite "Twilight" series actresses lending a hand at a Phoenix food bank, have been retweeted after the jump.

I'm @brianwarmoth, and this is Twitter-Wood for December 21, 2010.

Spooky Holiday Gifts for Horror Fans

17 December 2010 11:10 AM, PST | | See recent JustPressPlay news »

Different people, different strokes. Some people want Christmas gifts to be nice and warming, like the spirit of the season; but some believe that it's a time to give your loved ones what they really want. If said loved ones happen to be into blood, guts and generally malicious stories, then why not have a little blood, guts and malice for Christmas? It's a sign of care, after all. Here's a list of items to help you pick a great last minute gift for the horror fans.

• • •

Se7en [Blu-ray]

The psychological thriller that made horror fans everywhere think twice before opening a FedEx box was finally made available on Blu-ray earlier this year, just in time for the fifteenth anniversary of this modern classic. This is the movie that put David Fincher on the map and steered Brad Pitt away from pretty boy gigs and into grittier roles. »

Celebs Tweet About Ryan Reynolds And Scarlett Johansson's Split In Today's Twitter-Wood

15 December 2010 2:18 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

I try to keep Twitter-Wood chiefly focused on movies-related tweets, but today Quinton Aaron of "The Blind Side" post a pic from his first week shooting on "One Tree Hill" and Gillian Jacobs got up close and personal with her favorite bathroom door on the "Community" set, so certain allowances had to be made.

Outside of TV Land, Rose McGowan reacted to insinuations that people out there are dying from attempting to strap guns to their legs, while Danny DeVito offered advice about weed and pets, and Brian Lynch polled his followers with an important question related to Ryan Reynolds and Scarlett Johansson's breakup. See what he asked down below, along with what Kat Dennings has been dreaming about lately.

Miley Cyrus Smoking, Elizabeth Edwards' Funeral And 'Lost' Jabs On 'Community' In Today's Twitter-Wood

Elizabeth Edwards showed up in numerous memorial tweets earlier this week, but even more posts surfaced today to express disgust over the Westboro Baptist Church's decision to picket her funeral. The announcement did inspire Michael Ian Black to declare a new item to scratch off of his life's bucket list, though.

In other topics, Denis Leary applauded Miley Cyrus for video of the singer-actress smoking a bong. His commentary, along with Ice-t's reaction to Wesley Snipes going to jail and Damon Lindelof on the "Community" Christmas special's "Lost" jab has been retweeted after the jump.

‘Hobo With A Shotgun’ Finds A Distributor

8 December 2010 9:36 PM, PST | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

Many of you will remember the short film Hobo With A Shotgun, directed by Jason Eisener which won the Grindhouse Trailer Contest put on by the SXSW Film Festival & Robert Rodriguez. It all began with an announcement on Ain’t It Cool News, about a contest that gave a three week deadline to come up with a “grindhouse” style trailer for a fake movie and would later appear in between Rodriguez’s Planet Terror and Tarantino’s Death Proof.

Well ever since the Dartmouth filmmakers’ (Jason Eisener, Robert Cotterill and John Davies) won the notorious Trailer Competition in Austin, they have become a favourite among fans of the gore-action-comedy genre garnering more than 500,000 Internet hits. After much anticipation, the talented trio was ready to give Hobo With A Shotgun feature-length treatment and officially announced their plans to do so when they screened their award winning short film Treevenge at the 2008 Fantasia Film Festival. »

The Return Of Harry Potter… And Double Dipping?

3 December 2010 5:00 AM, PST | | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Last weekend saw the latest installment of the Harry Potter franchise surpass all the previous movies’ performances at the box office to lead the weekend with a Us opening of around $125 million. This was a massive success for Warner Bros, making them the leading box office performing studio so far this year. With only Tangled offering any real competition the following weekend, the success is sure to continue.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is part one of a two part adaptation of Jk Rowling’s source novel. Splitting one film into two parts has become an increasingly popular habit in recent years, and with part two of Deathly Hallows sure to match its predecessor financially, it looks like a winning decision. However, I have to ask the question – is this recent trend an attempt at providing the right platform for epic tales to be told, or is it a »

WikiLeaks, The Tokyo Earthquake And 'Harry Potter' Reactions In Today's Twitter-Wood

30 November 2010 1:00 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Some Twitter-Wood citizens were shocked after the organization WikiLeaks decided to release U.S. diplomatic cables that they'd obtained over the weekend. Some responded with a total lack of surprise, such as Michael Ian Black, and at least one man just wanted to know if they were aware of where his keys might be.

A Tuesday earthquake in Japan, meanwhile, startled people as well. Olivia Wilde has a theory about why it occurred that you probably hadn't considered, while Tom Felton didn't appear to have experienced an interruption during his grocery shopping because of the quake. Find out what he was looking at in Tokyo after the jump, as well as what Rose McGowan thought of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1," as well as how "Weird" Al Yankovic sees himself.

With director Omar Naim’s supernaturally-tinged Dead Awake opening in limited release this Friday, December 3 (the flick is set to hit DVD/Blu-ray on March 29 of next year), this writer caught up today with one of the film’s principals, actress Amy Smart, who dished on the movie as well as the possibility of a third film in the Crank series and her potential inclusion in a future horror project.

Known best as a comedic actress for her turns in the films Just Friends and Road Trip (among others) and to genre fans for her roles in The Butterfly Effect and Mirrors (as well the gonzo action flicks Crank and Crank: High Voltage, in which she portrayed the girlfriend of actor Jason Statham’s adrenalized hit-man ‘Chev Chelios’), Smart appears in Dead Awake as ‘Natalie’, the long-lost love of young funeral parlor employee ‘Dylan’ (actor Nick Stahl), a young man »

After causing a storm as a faux-trailer in Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez’s Grindhouse, Machete finally makes it to the big screen as a feature-length movie filled with bullets, boobs and bloodshed! Danny Trejo plays the titular character – a bad-ass Mexican federale turned mercenary, turned hero who – after seeing his wife brutally murdered and himself left for dead – is set up for the assassination of a Us Senator by a cadre of corrupt officials intent on ridding the south of illegal immigrants. Trejo’s Machete takes his (bloody) revenge on those that had set him up with the help of Michelle Rodriguez, a street vendor come revolutionary by the name of She, and a sexy »

Machete review

24 November 2010 6:16 AM, PST | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Danny Trejo stars in Robert Rodriguez’s ulta-violent action movie Machete. Here’s Ryan’s review…

Danny Trejo’s cool. We know this from his lengthy list of film appearances, which includes Heat, Once Upon A Time In Mexico, Con Air and, more recently, Predators. He also has that unmistakeable, lined, grizzled face that appears to have a hundred years of terrible, extraordinary experiences etched onto it, a face that exudes menace and charm in almost equal measure.

A bit player for years (he scored his first role, a tiny part in 1985’s Runaway Train, while working as a drug counsellor for a member of the film’s cast), Machete at last places Trejo centre stage.

A spin-off from the mock trailer that appeared in Robert Rodriguez’s half of Grindhouse, Machete is another deliriously violent, self-referential action throw-back in the vein of straight-to-video mulch such as Chuck Norris’ unintentionally side-splitting Lone Wolf McQuade. »

Divas Do Hollywood: We Grade Their Acting

Screen Gems

Madonna and Whitney to Gwen and Britney… Nearly every pop queen has packed up their diva ways and taken them to the big screen.

The results have been mixed; for every Mariah Carey in “Precious,” there’s a Mariah Carey in “Glitter,” and for every J. Hudson in “Dreamgirls,” there’s a J. Simpson in “Employee of the Month.”

With veteran screen diva Cher teaching acting newcomer Christina Aguilera the tricks of crossing over in “Burlesque,” here’s a rundown of the most memorable instances of divas gone Hollywood.

Mariah Carey Everett Collection

Movies: “Glitter” (2001), “Precious” (2009)

Report: When she played a gorgeous pop diva in “Glitter” … not so much. But when she went un-glam to play social worker Ms. Weiss in “Precious,” Carey proved she had some acting skills. To be fair, not even Meryl Streep could have made “Glitter” sparkle, and plenty of actresses have shined only »

Review: Machete

21 November 2010 3:05 AM, PST | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s Grindhouse was the unfortunate victim of its own gimmick. It was originally conceived as a double-bill in reverence to the B-movie and splatter tradition of yesteryear, but American audiences failed to connect with the concept, and as a result, the feature was spilt into two, diminishing its unique appeal.

One of the major talking points of Grindhouse (or Death Proof and Planet Terror) was the number of spoof trailers showcased before the main features. The most notable of these was Machete, featuring Rodriguez regular Danny Trego as the knife-wielding, easy-loving, all round hard-ass titular character. And now we have the full movie, which much like Grindhouse had the potential to fall victim to its own self-awareness.

It was possible that Machete would rely too heavily on the audience’s knowledge of Rodriguez’s work, and indeed, the references and in jokes that were bound to litter the movie. »

The 10 coolest Quentin Tarantino movie moments

19 November 2010 4:03 AM, PST | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Quentin Tarantino is renowned for his slick writing and memorable characters. Helen celebrates ten of the auteur's finest movie moments...

Although the upcoming Machete (well, it's upcoming if you live in the UK like us) is well and truly Robert Rodriguez’s baby, spawned from a fake trailer as part of the Grindhouse collaboration, he’s enlisted Quentin Tarantino as his uncredited producer on the sly. Why? Because he’s cool - what he does is cool.

Not all of his projects have enjoyed the critical acclaim that Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction did, but few can deny that everything Quentin turns his hand to has an unmistakable air of awesome. I’ve compiled a list of his top 10 coolest movie moments, although with so many moments to choose from, heated geek debate is inevitable...

Eli Roth to Produce Clown Faux Trailer Into Feature Length Scarefest

18 November 2010 | Horror Asylum | See recent Horror Asylum news »

Director, actor, writer and producer Eli Roth ('Cabin Fever', 'Hostel', 'The Funhouse 3D') is getting behind a new flick from director John Watts. The new feature 'Clown' is based on a faux trailer that Watts himself put together. And of course after his 'Grindhouse' experience we all know Roth loves his faux trailers, having already signed on to develop his horror teaser 'Thanksgiving' (featured between Quentin Tarantino's 'Death Proof' and Robert Rodriquez's 'Planet Terror') into a full-length movie. Incredibally Watts decided to namedrop Roth into the fake trailer (with a little 'master of horror' compliment) and this has certainly worked in his favour. Poster arrives for The Divide

31 October 2010 9:28 PM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

A poster surfaces for Xavier Gens’ forthcoming post-apocalyptic sci-fi movie, The Divide...

The Divide is a film that's somehow slipped under our radar thus far, but there are several facts about this forthcoming French sci-fi movie that make it well worth our attention.

For one thing, it's got an excellent ensemble cast, including The Terminator and Aliens star Michael Biehn (who was great value in Robert Rodriguez's half of Grindhouse, Planet Terror), Rosanna Arquette, and Milo Ventimiglia (Peter Petrelli in Heroes).

The Divide's director, Xavier Gens, wrote and helmed Frontier(s), a grim and visually distinctive horror that garnered a fair amount of critical praise on its release in 2007. Gens also directed the iffy videogame adaptation Hitman starring Timothy Olyphant, though we won't hold that against him.

But perhaps the most intriguing aspect of The Divide is its premise. A near-future New York City is almost entirely destroyed by a nuclear bomb, »
