Based on the best-selling novel by Lissa Evans, the delightful and heartwarming period piece, Their Finest, arrives on Blu-ray™ (plus Digital HD) and DVD on July 11 from Lionsgate; Digital HD on June 30 and On Demand on July 11 from EuropaCorp. From the producers of Brooklyn and Carol, Their Finest takes place in Britain during World War II and tells the story of a film crew as they create a movie to boost the country’s morale after the Blitz. Gemma Arterton, Sam Claflin and Golden Globe winner Bill Nighy (2007, Best Performance by an Actor in a Limited Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television, Gideon’s Daughter) lead an all-star cast in what Andrew Barker at Variety considers “a relentlessly charming romantic comedy.” Directed by Lone Scherfig (An Education, One Day), the Their Finest Blu-ray and DVD will be available for the suggested retail price of $24.99 and $19.98, respectively.

1940, London, the Blitz. With England’s morale at stake, Catrin (Gemma Arterton), an untried screenwriter, works under fire with a makeshift cast and crew to make a film to lift the nation’s flagging spirits, and inspire America to join the war. Catrin and a fellow writer, Buckley (Sam Claflin), reluctantly joins forces with fading matinee idol Ambrose Hilliard (Bill Nighy) on a movie to warm the hearts of the nation and capture the imagination of the American public.

Five Amazing Swimming Scenes in Movies

8 June 2017 3:30 AM, PDT | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

The swimming pool is a surprisingly common motif in the movie world. Not only does water look great on camera (see Daniel Craig in Casino Royale), it also serves as the perfect metaphor. Whether it’s suggesting that a character is out of their depth, shallow as a paddling pool, or set to take a trip into their own subconscious, the act of swimming is a potent symbol. Hollywood movies are filled with watery scenes, with everything from Sunset Boulevard to Jaws, The Graduate, Skyfall, and Spring Breakers throwing their characters in at the deep end. Arthouse cinema is similarly fixated

First Full Trailer for Alien Invasion Thriller 'Revolt' Featuring Lee Pace

3 June 2017 11:23 AM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

"Must have some weakness, something we can use against them." A full-length trailer has been unveiled for an indie sci-fi project titled Revolt, from director Joe Miale making his feature debut. The film stars Lee Pace as a Us soldier in Africa attempting to fight back against a brutal alien invasion. This kind of seems a bit like a mash-up between District 9 and Transformers, with robot-like alien creatures taking over. Also with Bérénice Marlohe (who was also in the sci-fi Kill Switch, as well as Skyfall and Song to Song), plus Amy Louise Wilson, Alan Santini, and Tom Fairfoot. This has some solid VFX work and it seems like it could be a fun under-the-radar sci-fi film, I just hope it's better than it looks. This trailer is worth a watch. Here's the first international trailer for Joe Miale's sci-fi Revolt, found on YouTube (via Quiet Earth) The »

Must Watch: Video – The career of cinematographer Roger Deakins

31 May 2017 6:54 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Chances are, even if you’ve never heard of him, you’ve probably seen some Roger Deakins’ work. The legendary cinematographer, hailing from Torquay in Devon, who has been working within the film industry for over forty years, has over 75 credits to his name since he exploded onto cinema screens back in the late 1970s.

Over the years, Deakins has worked on the likes of Sid and Nancy, Barton Fink, Fargo (in fact, most of the Coens’ stuff), The Village, Jarhead, Prisoners, Sicario, The Shawshank Redemption and Skyfall. Obviously there are dozens of other examples, most of which you can take a squint at in this excellent video which has just made it onto YouTube.

Created by film student James Murphy, the ten-minute nod to Deakins, titled Roger Deakins – Story in a Visual Manner, is a love letter to the director of photography which, quite frankly, rocks.

Pack the finest marmalade sandwiches and prepare for another grand adventure – the legendary little bear is back in today’s first-look teaser for Paddington 2.

Heralding the return of writer-director Paul King – who crafted a heartfelt sleeper hit two years ago, when the original Paddington charmed its way to a global cume of $268 million – StudioCanal’s CG/live-action sequel opens at a time when Paddington Bear is considered a permanent member of the Brown family. But there’s trouble brewing in Windsor Gardens. While moseying around a London antique shop, our fuzzy, pint-sized protagonist happens across a unique pop-up book, one which he deems to be the perfect present for Aunt Lucy’s 100th birthday.

So far, so Paddington. But when the book is stolen by a mystery thief, our kind-hearted lead is forced to scramble across the four corners of London. Skyfall and Spectre‘s Ben Whishaw is back in the voice booth, »

Sam Mendes Exits ‘James And The Giant Peach,’ Now Eyes Live-Action ‘Pinocchio’

23 May 2017 12:31 PM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Sam Mendes has been spending his time post “Skyfall,” peeking in at various projects, but not quite committing to anything yet. Well, that’s not entirely fair as “The Voyeur’s Motel” essentially fell apart over potential issues with the source material and a competing project, but though the filmmaker has eyeballed “Beautiful Ruins,” “My Favorite Thing Is Monsters,” and “James And The Giant Peach,” nothing has really stuck.

Sam Mendes in talks to direct Disney’s Pinocchio

23 May 2017 9:54 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

It looks like Disney may have found a director for its live-action Pinocchio remake, with Deadline reporting that Skyfall and Spectre helmer Sam Mendes is in talks to join the project, which has been scripted by Chris Weitz (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story).

Pinocchio is one of many animated classics that Disney is remaking; production is gearing up to get underway on Guy Ritchie’s Aladdin and Tim Burton’s Dumbo, while Jon Favreau is also directing The Lion King and a sequel to The Jungle Book. Other projects on the horizon include Mulan, The Little Mermaid and Cruella De Vil.

Mendes, who has opted against a 007 return for Bond 25, was slated to direct The Voyeur’s Motel with Steven Spielberg producing, although the project was scrapped in November. He is currently directing the stage play The Ferryman, which just opened in London.

Newswire: Sam Mendes may direct Disney’s live-action Pinocchio remake

23 May 2017 9:54 AM, PDT | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

Sam Mendes began his film career tackling all-caps serious dramas like American Beauty and Revolutionary Road, but has swerved to franchise blockbusters as of late with the Bond movies Skyfall and Spectre. Now Disney might enlist him to helm its live-action remake of Pinocchio: according to Variety, Mendes is in “early talks” for the project. Previously it was reported that he was in the same stage of negotiations for a new James And The Giant Peach movie, but Variety reports that’s off the table.

While Pinocchio still might not seem like a perfect fit for Mendes, keep in mind that he did direct a London stage production of Charlie And The Chocolate Factory. Disney also recently hired Guy Ritchie to make Aladdin, so its choices have been relatively offbeat. And Pinocchio could be pretty juicy material. Live-Action Pinocchio Courting Former James Bond Director Sam Mendes

Sam Mendes, the Oscar-winning director behind Skyfall and Spectre, has come into contention to helm Disney’s long-brewing Pinocchio movie.

Deadline has the scoop, revealing that Mendes has now entered early talks to pull the strings on the live-action feature, one that’ll be ushered into a growing collection of revamped fairytales that already includes the likes of Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, The Jungle Book and Bill Condon’s box office smash, Beauty and the Beast. As for the story involving the iconic puppet – a puppet who longs to be viewed as a real boy after his master’s wish is inexplicably granted – we understand Chris Weitz is the brains behind the latest draft of Pinocchio‘s script, and is also expected to produce via his production banner.

And though it’s important to stress that Sam Mendes is yet to sign along the dotted line, this potential development looks »

Skyfall director Sam Mendes looks to have ditched one Disney remake, James and the Giant Peach, with a view to jump on board another. News today links him to one of their live-action adaptations, Pinocchio, as he hits very early stages of talks to helm the upcoming production.

Don’t get too excited, a source close to Mendes has revealed that the director isn’t committing himself to anything just yet and is keeping his options open as he concentrates his efforts on his West End Play The Ferryman where he makes his Royal Court debut at the Gielgud theatre in London.

Mendes, who is looking to bulk out his film schedule, was attached to The Voyeurs Motel, a project based on an article in The New Yorker by Talese. The film focused on a Colorado voyeur who bought a motel and renovated it to allow him »

Sam Mendes in talks to direct Disney’s Pinnochio

Skyfall and Spectre director Sam Mendes is in talks to take the helm of Disney live-action remake of Pinnochio. The Mouse House is in active development on the planned motion picture, based on their 1940 film, which itself was taken from the 1883 children’s book about a puppet and a poor woodcarver. The news is reported by Variety.

Peter Hedges (What’s Eating Gilbert Grape) is writing the screenplay for the film.

Warner Brothers also have a ‘rival’ Pinnochio movie in the works, one which is written by Paul Thomas Anderson. That movie, which is in active development, has Robert Downey Jr. slated to star as Geppetto.
