- Monk is asked to consult on the murder of a woman, but his issues with nudity hamper his skills.
- At night, a girl runs from her car to a mansion of Peter Magneri, rings the bell and shouts that it is a 'Question of life and death'. Nobody answers. Another vehicle stops near her, terrified she offers the person a file she is holding. The file is not taken. She runs from the person to a mobile home on the beach, nobody is in. She runs away to the beach clutching the file, is caught and stabbed with a big knife. The attacker takes the file.
The police is on the scene, Monk arrives and puts on 'beach shoes'. The police and Natalie try to hide from him the fact that it is a nudist beach. Monk discovers that the girl had a paper cut on her finger. But there is no paper around there.
The police finds the girl's nail near the mobile home. Its owner, Chance Singer, arrives in a Jeep. Monk asks him to put a shirt on - not realizing that Chance is completely naked. From that moment, Monk is hysterical and convinced that Chance is the murderer. At night he enters Chance's mobile home but the beach party arrives and he and Natalie must hide in a closet. He escapes by switching off the light but is caught by Chance.
Monk tries to figure out how Chance, who spent the night in the police cell, did it. The police and Monk first visit Peter Magneri and then Arlene who knew the murdered girl, Vickie. Monk keeps on misbehaving. Finally Captain Stottlemeyer takes him off the case. Monk goes to Dr Kroger and relates the horror when he was, naked, held in the air by his legs by a strange man and beaten. There was blood on him but his mother just looked on. Dr Kroger tells him that it was his birth. Monk is relieved and starts thinking rationally.
He figures out who murdered Vickie who wanted to warn Peter Magneri that he was in an acute danger of a heart attack. But Peter Magneri was told just 2 weeks earlier that he was in a perfect health! At that moment, Chance Singer with his group of nudist is winning a case against Peter Magneri who wants the beach for himself. Magneri is terribly upset but Chance receives a call from Stottlemeyer and drops the case. Magneri is taken to the hospital. The murderer is arrested.
Chance, naked as usual, is about to move out when Monk comes to apologise. He does not look at Chance. Chance enthusiastically hugs Monk and Monk walks into the sea.
