Film Review: ‘Acts of Violence’

Film Review: ‘Acts of Violence’
In vigilante fantasy “Acts of Violence,” it doesn’t matter how many of the titular acts occur — or how many people get killed, “bad” and “good” — so long as the goal is righteous, not to mention self-righteous. If a dozen or two folks die en route to a kidnap victim being rescued, well, that’s just the price that family, loyalty and courage required.

That sort of ratio might seem utterly crazy in the real world, but it’s routine in the kind of boilerplate modern action movie that director Brett Donowho’s feature in many way typifies. There’s no question here that taking the law into his own hands is simply what a real man’s gotta do. And there’s no more novelty in that reactionary message anymore than there is in rest of this slick and well-paced if uninspired time-filler, which Lionsgate is giving a limited theatrical launch simultaneous with its on-demand release

Trailer Watch: Helen Mirren Builds a Haunted House in “Winchester”

“Winchester”

“I will do whatever it takes to protect my family,” says Sarah Winchester (Helen Mirren) in a new trailer for “Winchester.” She takes extraordinary — and extraordinarily odd — measures to keep them safe. Inspired by a true story, the gothic thriller sees the heiress to to the Winchester fortune building a seven-story house on an isolated stretch of land outside of San Francisco.

The property isn’t intended as a safe haven for her loved ones — it contains hundreds of rooms, and she plans to use them to imprison the ghosts she’s convinced mean harm to the Winchesters.

We’re told that Sarah’s “mind is as chaotic as the house itself” and there’s concerns about “her sanity,” but the creepy footage suggests that Sarah’s fears are warranted. She isn’t just imagining a malignant presence in the air — it’s actually there, and intends to do harm.

‘Winchester’ Trailer: The House That Ghosts Built Brings New Scares and a Shorter Title

No, we’re not talking about a reboot of Ghostbusters again (at least not yet), but rather Winchester. Formerly given the subtitle of “The House That Ghosts Built” when the […]

‘Winchester’ Trailer: Helen Mirren Builds The Ultimate Haunted House

If you have even a passing knowledge of guns, you know the name Winchester, as it’s one of the most popular weapons makers ever. The upcoming “Winchester” shines a light on another, more sinister part of their legacy.

Directed by The Spierig Brothers (“Jigsaw,” “Predestination“), and starring Helen Mirren, Jason Clarke, Sarah Snook, Angus Sampson, and Finn Scicluna-o’Prey, the film tells the (somewhat exaggerated) true story of Sarah Winchester, who built an epic, unending mansion — featuring dead-ends and staircases to nowhere — one that she believes has become haunted by spectres who have a score to settle with the family who built their fortune on blood.

Question What’s Real and What’s Not in This New Winchester Trailer

A new trailer for CBS Films’ upcoming period haunted house film Winchester, which is directed by the Spierig brothers (Jigsaw, Predestination), has been released; and this one really amps up the amount of scares we should be seeing. Helen Mirren to Be Honored at Aarp’s Movies for Grownups Awards

Mirren in “The Hundred-Foot Journey”: Francois Duhamel/DreamWorks

Helen Mirren embraces being an adult — which is no easy feat in an industry that marginalizes women over 40. She’s called out Hollywood’s ageism as “fucking outrageous” and spoken about how she’s much more confident and willing to tell people to “fuck off” now than when she was younger. So it makes perfect sense that Mirren will receive her next accolade at the 17th annual Movies for Grownups Awards.

According to the Associated Press, the Oscar winner will take home the Movies for Grownups’ Career Achievement Award on February 5. Established by the Aarp in 2002, the Movies for Grownups Awards honor films and performers with “a grown-up state of mind.”

Mirren stated that she is “greatly honored” to receive the Career Achievement Award and described film as “the ultimate mirror up to nature.”

Halloween 2017: Touring the Winchester Mystery House with the Filmmakers Behind Winchester: The House That Ghosts Built

  • DailyDead
Even though it’s located about six hours north of where I currently reside, I admittedly knew very little about the Winchester Mystery House prior to last week, which is when Daily Dead attended a special tour of one of the most haunted houses in America, alongside Michael and Peter Spierig. The duo recently celebrated the debut of the new trailer for their upcoming supernatural horror project, Winchester: The House That Ghosts Built, which stars Oscar-winner Helen Mirren, Jason Clarke, and Sarah Snook (who the directors recently collaborated with on Predestination), and the filmmakers were eager to head inside and talk more about the lengths they went to in order to stay true to who they believed Sarah Winchester was, and her passion for turning Winchester into one of the most perplexing properties in history.

Before we headed inside the Winchester Mystery House, we were greeted by producer Tim McGahan,

The Chilling Story Behind the Winchester Mystery House and the Woman Who Built It

Image Source: CBS Films The story of Sarah Winchester and the Winchester Mystery House is bizarre, intriguing, and spooky as hell. Though it's been a fairly well-known tale for some time, it's attracted more attention due to the upcoming thriller Winchester: The House That Ghosts Built, starring Helen Mirren as the titular character. So, what do you need to know about the eerie history surrounding the infamous real-life home? Sarah Lockwood Pardee was born in New Haven, Ct, around 1839. In her early 20s, she married Oliver Winchester of the Winchester Repeating Arms Company. Several years later, Sarah gave birth to a daughter, Annie. Tragically, Annie died just a month later from marasmus, or severe malnutrition. From that point on, Sarah's luck only worsened. In the early 1880s, her father-in-law passed away, and then her husband succumbed to tuberculosis a year later. Though she received an inheritance of $20 million - as
