The film was designed to be a tribute to Gothic art and the Ghost story genre (film and literature), thus all the characters in the film are named after authors and directors of Ghost stories. Jane Jackson is named after Shirley Jackson, author of The Haunting, Carl Wise was named after director Robert Wise, director of the film adaptation of The Haunting, and Henry Wingrave is named after Henry James and the title character of James' ghost story Owen Wingrave.
