Fresh Progress From Hell: 'Constantine' Sequel Still in the Cards

I'm pretty sure my balls shriveled up inside my body while talking to legendary producer Lauren Shuler Donner, who received the Producer's Showcase Award at Thursday night's Saturn Awards. I approached her in the press room backstage with just had one question on my mind - 'will Constantine 2 ever move forward?' - and she...kinda answered me. Put a cup on and peruse on inside. "I hope [it happens]. I want to," she said. "We tried it, we always got there, and then we had a few bumps in the road. Keanu was involved with us, everybody was. We just had a few bumps in the road." The project isn't dead in the water yet, though: "Were gonna try again...we heard a good take," she told me before brushing me aside, presumably on her way to enjoying a blood-soaked, extra-rare steak dinner at some swanky Beverly Hills establishment. At least.

Update on Constantine 2

When Constantine opened in 2005 to a worldwide box office of $230 million, it seemed like the start of a franchise for the comic book adaptation. In 2006, producer Lauren Shuler Donner spoke positively about a sequel, saying she and a "team of writers" were "really going to go for it" on a sequel that would feature a "hard" R-rating, Keanu Reeves, and a story "outside of America." Then things went quiet.

In 2007, director Francis Lawrence suggested the sequel might actually be a prequel. "I like origin stories," he told ShockTilYouDrop. Then, once again, news of a sequel ceased.

Now it looks like a sequel may be on its way. Last year, Reeves told MoviesOnline he "wouldn't mind doing another Constantine" and he may get his wish. Recently, Shuler Donner told SciFiWire that a sequel "looks very good," and that she is "looking for a writer."

Wait, what happened to the "team?" Let's

Producer Talks Magneto, Constantine 2 and X-Men: First Class

Producer Lauren Shuler Donner revealed to Sci Fi Wire that she is still planning to make a "Magneto" prequel, but will wait to see how "Wolverine" does in theaters. "We have a great script," she said. "Honestly, we have all been just so focused on getting Wolverine out. Magneto is a fantastic script, and hopefully we'll make it." She continued: "And then we have First Class, which is based on the X-Men comics' first class and is very literal to the title. It's the first class in Xavier's school. But that's just being written. I haven't even seen a first draft." Donner said that because of her work on "Pretty in Pink" and "St. Elmo's Fire," she found out that she likes kids/teenage movies. "I really do. Part of it takes me to my roots," she explained. "It's action. There seems, to me, to be more humor, or more potential for humor.

What's the Status of Constantine 2 ?

The likelihood of a Constantine 2 was looking spotty for a while. Following Constantine 's release in 2005, all parties involved, when pressed for details on a sequel, seemed unsure if we'd seen John Constantine return. Director Francis Lawrence told us in 2007 he'd be down to direct another film . Producer Lauren Shuler Donner told SciFi Wire recently, however that the notion of a follow-up, "Looks very good. Thinking about it. Looking for a writer." Interesting. Questions now arise: Would Keanu Reeves reprise his role? What storyline in the comic book series would they pull inspiration from? And, are they considering a "reboot" much like what Marvel did with the Hulk? Constantine opened in February of 2005 and grossed over $200 million...
