This film is an adaptation of the live action stage musical of the same name. Writer/director T.C. De Witt wrote the show in bed while recovering from a severe injury. The show was produced in the Summer of 2012 in Burlington, WI at the Malt House Theatre. The show and film's plot are nearly identical, though there are several changes from stage to screen. There is no Troll in bed hearing the story from Lily. There is no flashback to Scarlet and her Father. There are also many more songs.
Of the 15 original songs from the stage show, only "Believing in Dreaming", "1-2-3, Therapy", "Love/Hate", and "Where A Hero Gets Their Start" appear in the film. Much of the new dialogue in scenes is taken from the lyrics of the omitted songs.
Six original cast members of the stage production of The Princess Knight appear in this film. Candace Lauren Ostler, Kimberly Casey, and Rachel Oldernburg reprise their roles as Vesper, Scarlet, and Queen Rose Petal, respectively. Bryce Clark (the original Troll) appears as Desmond the Drunk, Jessica Cwik portrays the Baker, and Leah Nickolai appears as Little Scarlet.
Set Designer Jessica Swenson, with the help of carpenter Luke Kolarsky, recreated the set from The Princess Bride (1987).
The voice and original Scarlet Kimberly Casey makes an uncredited cameo as "Kim" in the opening scene.
