Rocker John Mellencamp put his anti-war speech to the side when he decides to be pro-troops at the Walter Reed Hospital. The show starts off with Mellencamp visiting some of the wounded soldiers, hearing their stories and he even signs a few autographs. The actual concert lasts just over an hour and features some reworked versions of classic songs as well as many tracks from the songwriter's then latest album "Freedom Road". I think it goes without saying that there are a few too many new tracks and I'd say even some die-hard Mellencamp fans would agree that certain songs really don't stand out as classics. Stuff like "Minutes to Memories" and "My Aeroplane" really can't stand next to even the better songs on that album let alone trying to go up against many of the classics. "The Americans" is a good little number as is "Freedom's Road" but I think most people would agree that "Jim Crow" could have been left off for something else. The show kicks off with a very good acoustic version of "Small Town" and we get a really re-worked version of "Lonely Ol' Night" which features Mellencamp on stage alone with his guitar. The highlight of the entire film has the be the rocking "Jack and Diane", which just keeps getting better with age but what also makes this performance so good is what Mellencamp does with one of the veterans in the crowd. All in all this is a pretty impressive show and especially when one considers what it was for. I think a couple of the newer songs could have been left off but even with that said this is still an impressive performance.
