Charlize Theron – A Life in Pictures, BAFTA Tribute

14 November 2011 5:25 AM, PST | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

She’s been an assassin, a coal miner, a supermodel and an astronauts wife; portrayed Britt Ekland, transformed herself into the most misunderstood monster of modern times, been tortured by Satan and is soon to be seen as the evil queen with her murderous sights set on Snow White. I am talking about the beautiful, blonde bombshell from South Africa, Charlize Theron.

It seems a little premature to have a ‘Life in Pictures’ tribute for Theron; at just 36 she has only been on screen for 16 years since making her debut in 2 Days in the Valley. She had been in Hollywood less than a year when she won the role of Helga and her sexy performance stole the show and earned her a dominant role on the movie poster in her lingerie, ‘I was totally unprepared for that. A year earlier I had bought a one-way ticket from South Africa to »

Looking back on pre-'Monster' Charlize Theron

11 November 2011 11:37 AM, PST | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

In advance of her reportedly strong performance in “Young Adult” (which I haven’t seen yet, but Kris recently enthused over), I’ve been on something of a Charlize Theron kick lately. I’ve always liked the actress – she has about as much spiky, couldn’t-give-a-shit character as it’s possible for someone who appears to be made of fine bone china to have – and the last few years have been dispiriting ones for her fans. Her cameo in “The Road” was a frustrating tease of her firepower, she was committed but oddly constrained in “The Burning Plain” (where Jennifer Lawrence and Kim Basinger »

Charlize Theron Wants To Take Cities Of Refuge

22 September 2011 5:32 AM, PDT | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

Since winning the ultimate golden statue for her remarkably committed performance in 2003′s Monster, South African born beauty Charlize Theron has certainly suffered the post-Oscar winning curse or blip that for whatever reason happens to an incredible number of leading ladies these days. There was the horribly misjudged attempt to make her into a Milla Jovovich or Kate Beckinsale like action hero in Aeon Flux and Hancock that didn’t work out, or appearing in her then partner’s flop Battle in Seattle and another flop in Guillermo Arriaga’s The Burning Plain, and although she has given good performances in The Road and In The Valley of Elah… she has threatened to become somewhat as an afterthought. Her only notable screen presence has been the Dior ads!

Recently she seems to have made a conscience effort to turn that all around beginning later this year with Jason Reitman’s »

Crime Thriller 'Cities Of Refuge' Finds A Citizen In Charlize Theron

It looks like Charlize Theron is on the comeback trail. After a string of films that either underperformed or just weren't worthy of her talents--"Battle In Seattle," "In The Valley Of Elah," "The Burning Plain," "Hancock," "The Road"--the actress has lined up a formidable slate of projects. Next year she'll be starring in two major tentpoles, Ridley Scott's "Prometheus" and "Snow White and the Huntsman" and before the end of the year we may be hearing Oscar talk for her turn in Jason Reitman's "Young Adult." So when we hear the words "crime thriller" associated with Theron, we can't help… »

Herr Frankenstein would be proud. Thanks to CGI, three iconic actresses have been resurrected to appear with Charlize Theron in a Dior commercial for its J'Adore perfume. In the ad Theron, the face of the fragrance, is seen getting ready for a runway show at the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles, changing into a gold gown while exchanging glances with Grace Kelly, Marlene Dietrich and Marilyn Monroe.

The ad was shot by Oscar-winning director Jean-Jacques Annaud ('Black and White in Color,' 'The Name of the Rose,' 'Seven Years in Tibet') and uses the song 'Heavy Cross' by The Gossip.

Theron, who won an Oscar for her role in 'Monster,' hasn't had a major big screen role since 2008's 'The Burning Plain,' but that will change with upcoming turns in 'Young Adult, »

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has released its annual list of invited new members, and it’s clear they’re continuing to try to make their membership younger. On the list alongside veterans like John Hawkes and David Duchovny are a slew of twentysomethings, including Mia Wasikowska, Ellen Page, Jesse Eisenberg, Mila Kunis, Beyonce Knowles, Jennifer Lawrence, and Rooney Mara. The Board of Governors also decided to extend an invitation to Restrepo codirector Tim Hetherington, the first time Academy membership has been bestowed posthumously. As a side note, it’s also a hoot to now say the phrase Oscar voter Russell Brand. »

Confirmed! 'The Hunger Games' Names Its Katniss: Jennifer Lawrence

17 March 2011 2:10 PM, PDT | NextMovie | See recent NextMovie news »

Update: Lionsgate has confirmed to MTV News that Jennifer Lawrence is indeed set to star as Katniss Everdeen in director Gary Ross' adaptation of "The Hunger Games."

"I'm so excited to work with Jen and see her bring this character to life,"  Ross tells MTV. "Katniss requires a young actress with strength, depth, complexity, tenderness and power. There are very few people alive who can bring that to a role. Jen brings it in spades. She’s going to be an amazing Katniss."

"Jennifer's just an incredible actress," author Suzanne Collins tells MTV. "So powerful, vulnerable, beautiful, unforgiving and brave. I never thought we'd find somebody this perfect for the role. And I can't wait for everyone to see her play it."

May the odds be ever in her favor!

'Hunger Games' Casting is Continued Evidence Hollywood has Gotten Lazy

14 March 2011 12:37 PM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Last week I finished reading "The Hunger Games" by Suzanne Collins and now I am about halfway through book two, "Catching Fire". Knowing full well Lionsgate is preparing a filmed adaptation of the trilogy, and that casting rumors have been surfacing since the project was announced, I can't help but think about which actors would be a good fit for the lead roles.

Producers and director Garry Ross (Seabiscuit) are also trying to figure out who they'll pick to carry the franchise, testing young female actors ranging from ages approximately 14-21 years-old to play the athletic master of the bow and arrow, Katniss Everdeen. Recent Oscar nominee Jennifer Lawrence (Winter's Bone) is said to have all but signed on the dotted line, but let's look at who else was under consideration: Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit), Abigail Breslin (Little Miss Sunshine), Chloe Moretz (Kick-Ass, Let Me In), Lyndsy Fonseca (Kick-Ass), Emma Roberts »

Jennifer Lawrence Q&A

25 February 2011 8:42 AM, PST | Filmmaker Magazine - Blog | See recent Filmmaker Magazine news »

This piece was originally printed in the Spring 2010 issue. Winter’s Bone is nominated for Best Picture, Best Actress (Jennifer Lawrence), Best Supporting Actor (John Hawkes) and Best Adapted Screenplay (Debra Granik & Anne Rosellini).

It’s not often a striking young girl makes it in Hollywood without accentuating her looks, but Jennifer Lawrence is not your typical 19-year-old actress. While many of her peers go for lightweight parts in bubblegum teen comedies, Lawrence has taken a more serious route, filled with dark roles that deal with issues well beyond her years.

The Kentucky native left home for L.A. at 14 and after getting bit parts on TV shows like Monk, Cold Case and Medium, landed the role of daughter Lauren on the TBS series The Bill Engvall Show in 2007. A year later she was cast in her first leading role in The Poker House, an intense drama playing a young »

Why Jennifer Lawrence Deserves to Win the Best Actress Oscar

17 February 2011 1:00 AM, PST | Moviefone | See recent Moviefone news »

Filed under: Features, Oscar News, Awards

Wherever we turn, accolades pour down for Natalie Portman's performance in 'Black Swan.' In one fell swoop, she wiped away any post-'Professional' discontent and reestablished herself as one of Hollywood's leading actresses. But though her performance is noteworthy, and certainly worthy of an Oscar nomination, it has overshadowed the true gem of 2010 cinema: Jennifer Lawrence's Ree in 'Winter's Bone.'

At the age of 20, Lawrence leaped from supporting player in films like 'The Burning Plain' to breakout star, becoming the second-youngest Best Actress Oscar nominee (after Keisha Castle-Hughes in 'Whale Rider'). But what's remarkable is that it isn't for any leading female character we've seen before. It's not the beauty hidden behind makeup and tasked with being unremarkable, the crazy mind, the shrew or the emotional romance. Ree's strength and talent transcend the bounds of cinema, in a »

A Spirited Q & A With "Winter's Bone" Actress Jennifer Lawrence

9 February 2011 12:34 AM, PST | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

As a way of celebrating this year's nominees for the Spirit Awards in the weeks leading up to the ceremony, we reached out to as many as we could in an effort to better understand what went into their films, what they've gotten out of the experience, and where they've found their inspiration, both in regards to their work and other works of art that might've inspired them from the past year. Their answers will be published on a daily basis throughout February.

One of the recurring oddities of awards season is reconciling the actors and actresses who walk the red carpet with the roles they so thoroughly inhabited that got them honored in the first place. For Jennifer Lawrence, the difference has been particularly stark, radiating old school Hollywood glamour as she's strolled through one ceremony after another in recent months for her performance in "Winter's Bone" where as the steely Ree Dolly, »

Winter's Bone; Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps; Mr Nice; Amer; World's Greatest Dad

Somewhere between the doomed romance of Badlands, the communal violence of Deliverance and the dysfunctional family drama of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre lurks the haunting spectre of Winter's Bone (2010, Artificial Eye, 15). Directed by Debra Granik, whose use of authentically barren locations in the Ozark mountains of Missouri pays chilly dividends, this adaptation of Daniel Woodrell's novel walks a thin line between downbeat rural realism and mythological gothic horror. It's a beautiful balancing act that invests even the most incidental scene (a round-the-table rendition of "Fair and Tender Ladies", for example) with a level of eerie threat that elevates the entire drama into the realms of the metaphysical, a matter of life and death.

At the heart of the film's otherworldly appeal is rising star Jennifer Lawrence, whose best actress nod was just one of four »
