A few miles away, Janet Montgomery, a newly promoted police sergeant, is on a routine call that turns into the shooting death of Caleb Rivers, the teenage son of an immensely powerful local businessman. Anthony and Janet's lives intertwine when Anthony chooses to defend her instead of prosecuting her. In the weeks that follow, they will encounter racism, lost evidence, and legal and political manipulations as they urgently seek to balance the scales of justice.—Nakia Ford
- Anthony Springs was born and raised on the streets of New York, who has successfully reinvented himself into a polished and accomplished Assistant District Attorney in the progressive city of Brighton, Florida. He is unwavering in his belief that crime is a decision and that to which is the ultimate consequence. But, things change when while on an evening jog in his neighborhood, he is held at gunpoint by a police officer. Weeks later, he is chosen to prosecute Janet Montgomery, a black female cop who shot and killed the teenage son of Matthew Rivers, a prominent local businessman. Matthew has money and the influence of the District Attorney, Ronald Pressman, and nothing will get in the way of his getting justice for his son. Not wanting to be the black lawyer that sends a black cop to jail, Anthony decides to quit his job. With the support of his wife, Cora, Anthony takes on the challenge of defending Janet. She is getting death threats, the evidence that will prove her innocence is missing, and it looks like she may spend the rest of her life in prison. With all the odds against him, Anthony pushes forward and gets the break he needs, CCTV footage from a local business from the night of the shooting. Unbeknownst to Anthony, he is being followed by Thomas Shale, Matthew Rivers' fixer. Knowing that Anthony has the flash drive containing the footage of the shooting, he follows him home, then later breaks into the house to retrieve the flash drive. He is interrupted by Cora, who he strangles and leaves for dead. Fortunately, the home surveillance camera catches Shale red-handed. Anthony finds out at the hospital that Cora is pregnant and that she fought off her attacker. He also finds out that Cora's attacker works for Matthew Rivers. Anthony confronts his former boss, DA Ronald Pressman, and tells him that he knows that he is working for Matthew Rivers and how Shale attacked his wife. Pressman receives a copy of the CCTV footage and drops the charges against Janet. Months later, Anthony is elected to District Attorney, Janet is back on the police force, and Matthew Rivers is back on the golf course, business as usual.
