Do NOT watch this if you desire to stay off sweets, because after you view this 45-minute program on how candy is made, you will want to run out to the store and buy mos of these goodies you just saw in this show. The chocolates look creamy, the jelly beans have amazing flavors and the toffee, licorice sticks, caramels, and all the candy looks incredible.
We get small tours of places like Hershey, Pa., where everything is chocolate. The amount of candy bars this place produces every day is astronomical. We also see famous places that make all the other kinds of sweets, from big places to a little homemade candy shoppe in Indiana. What was amazing to me was watching the robots do their thing in these big candy- making factories. It is unbelievable what these machines can do. Sadly, they must have put a lot of people out to work but their productivity is unmatched.
We also get some history of different candy and where it all begins. Did you know all chocolate begins - in bean form - no more than 20 degrees north or south of the equator, or that licorice was used as a healing food back in Egypt in Old Testament times?
The program ends on a bizarre note as we see a company which puts insects into hard candy and chocolate. Yes, you can eat a scorpion inside a lollipop or have chocolate worms. Yuck!!!
This was a very interesting show, one of the better ones in this very good History Channel series.
