Already a successful television series in Taiwan, this Japanese language drama is also based on the manga by Nakajo Hisaya. Horikita Maki plays Ashiya Mizuki, a Japanese girl who has been living in the U.S. until she sees a young man named Sano Izumi (Oguri Shun) compete in the high jump on television. She begins to idolize him, and decides to move to Japan so she can attend the same school. The catch? Izumi goes to an all-boys school, so Mizuki can't be a student there. Unwilling to let such a trifling thing as being the wrong gender stop her, Mizuki disguises herself as a boy and enrolls at the school anyway. Written by Karumi

Please pardon the foolishness
13 April 2011 | by (Greece) – See all my reviews

At the beginning of the show a message is displayed: "This drama is fictional. Please pardon the foolishness". And if you do exactly that, you 'll love this!

Now, the current IMDb rating for "Hana zakari no kimi tachi e" is 8.9, a bit of an exaggeration I think. I mean, it is actually bad. Bad script, bad dialogue, bad acting, bad directing. Don't get me wrong. I loved this! You know the feeling you get with junk food? "I know this is bad, but it is SO good!". Let me explain...

The set is an all-boys high school and the plot focuses on the 3 lead characters, Ashiya Mizuki, Sano Izumi and Nakatsu Schuichi. They are surrounded by the rest of the students, who are mainly there to add to the craziness. In every episode there is a task, or a competition, or an event, and the school dorms constantly compete against each other, led by the dorm heads. So the craziness begins...

The story is based on a manga series and it feels like "watching" a manga or watching an anime, with real live actors. Everybody yells, wears weird outfits, there are a lot of punches thrown around, lots of "baka, baka, baka!" and "nani, nani, nani?", the school doctor wears bright colored eye contacts, and Nakatsu gets a nose bleed every time he sees Mizuki looking cute, and when he thinks about something we hear him talking to himself while acting out his thoughts at the same time! It looks stupid most of the time, but there are laugh-out-loud moments in every episode.

Nakatsu is obviously my favorite, since his character is lovable, providing many many funny moments but also some of the show's good/believable serious scenes. On the other hand, Sano's character is underdeveloped, he just stands there, with his hands in his pockets, saying nothing, looking grumpy. And yeah looking gorgeous, but that's not enough. From the supporting cast, Tenouji, the head of Dorm 1 who keeps beating up everybody and especially his teammates, Nanba, the womanizer and head of Dorm 2, and Sekime, the guy whose name nobody remembers, stood out.

Is this bad? Probably yeah... Should you watch this? Hell yeah!
