Storyline

The day after John F. Kennedy's assassination, 63 elderly Ohioans lost their lives in one of the largest nursing home fires in United States history. In stark black and white, Fireland cross-cuts numerous witnesses with hundreds of primary remnants of the fire - from photos to the infamous Zapruder footage of Kennedy's assassination (the only color footage in the film). 'America's Holocaust,' as it was called in the few papers that reported on the fire, has tremendous historical and social importance. Twenty-one of its unclaimed victims were buried in a mass grave when Ohio would not pay for individual burials. And while the media largely ignored it, the fire was the impetus for strict regulations on the state and federal levels. Patients died chained to their beds. They varied in age from 17 to 100. Definitely one of his best films

Justin has shown this all over the country now. Ohio uses Fireland in its inspector trainings. Family members now have something tangible to prove that this incident was not forgotten. Fireland didn't win Justin any awards - though he did win an Individual Artist's grant from the Ohio Arts Council with his proposal for almost $10,000 of matching funds - because the film is...bleak. Stark. Black and white. Interviews are candid, still images are not censored in any way. This event was remembered by the community - but remembered isn't even strong enough. They held onto it, kept the history alive - until Justin came to help them tell their story. This film will hopefully save lives as it is used throughout the inspecting and training process. That's exciting, isn't it?
