A Not Convincing and Persuasive Martial Arts Drama, 29 October 2009
Author: william-fu from Thailand

I was deeply disappointed by the way how the director had portrayed Bruce Lee's character development with Martial Arts at the early stages. At the same time, I believe that there wasn't enough of real training or exercise for the character's portrayal of fighting styles. Some fights and the movements, I must say are rather cheap as it looked more of a mimic rather than real actual fighting impact. I wasn't happy particularly at the beginning where Bruce is learning Boxing from Blair. I have no problem with any alterations of plots because I do think that this drama is very creative in a sense that it approaches Bruce Lee's story from different angles.

However, the boxing part, I must say that I had forced myself to sit through. I was not convinced that Blair is really a good boxer, depending on his physique and movements, the fight between him and Bruce was rather a mismash or quick cuts between them exchanging unclear blows. I could not see what punches they used, what combos they unleashed, and the coordination of they footworks. If anybody who watches boxing in ESPN, will surely feel the same, they do not look like boxers at all even though Bruce and Blair are characters who train boxing.

At this stage, Bruce was young and of course had not develop the concepts of Jeet Kune Do yet. However there are some conflicts as I see that young Bruce as he was practicing his Wing Chun, doesn't really follow the classical style footwork, rather, I see him jumping around out of control and flinging his punches trying to mimic the mature Bruce Lee. Bruce Lee was good with Wing chun, and all the fans would know and even saw the old footage of how he sparred with another partner. But this drama hasn't really achieve that level.

The one inch punch is another point I want to point out. Everybody knows that Bruce Lee has done a demonstration before with a guy standing still. But what sounds strange in this drama is that Yip Man was saying that he doen't need to follow boxing, but rather just use the one inch punch to beat the boxing champ. This is a confusing part because Bruce was told by yip man to wait till the 3rd round and first take the beatings. In the real world of Martial Arts, if one does not even fight back, eventually by taking beatings, you will get seriously injured. So Yip man doesn't really tell Bruce how exactly to stall the match or help Bruce, but just tell him to take the beatings. At the end, the students say, whatever the master says is right....We see Bruce actually following the orders of the master.

Now in real life, I think Bruce would not follow a theory or stick to rules blindly. But we still see Bruce doing everything that the master tells which goes against what Bruce has taught in his Jeet Kune Do concepts.

This is just the beginning of the series, my comments will keep on coming just to take note of any particular changes for this drama. Although I have negative comments, but I am looking forwardto watch and finish the entire series. It is interesting to watch the story of Bruce Lee made by mainland China, and compare it with the actual documentaries and films by Bruce Lee himself.
