Unlike many of this series's prior episode titles, the title "Survival Is Insufficient" is not a quotation from a Shakespeare play. Rather, it is a line from "Survival Instinct," the September 29, 1999, episode of the science-fiction TV show Star Trek: Voyager. In Emily St. John Mandel's source novel, this line is the motto of the Traveling Symphony theater company.
When Sarah and the group decide to go to the Museum of Civilization, Sarah leaves the invitation note and her glasses on the floor for Kirsten to find them. Then she says to Dieter: "Kirsten will find us. She always does".
This phrase is clearly related to a segment from the Station Eleven book; "I have found you nine times before, maybe ten, and I'll find you again until the last time. I always do".
