Wow just wow

Warning: Spoilers
I thought episode 5 was great and they won't be able to top it. But they did. This episode is even better. I don't remember the last time I was so invested in an episode. I mean emotionally. By the end of this episode when Sandman and Hob met in current timeline and Sandman finally accepted him as his friend. I was in tears of joy. Such a wholesome moment. This episode is a masterpiece in storytelling. I was so invested in Hobs story. If he is going to like life or not. Does he keep living or does he not? Will they keep meeting? What will happen in the next meeting? My mind was racing this whole episode. And ending was just such a culmination of joy that I have never felt before. This episode is a work of art in terms of storytelling. It kept me sooo hooked like glued to the screen. Very few episodes have made me feel like this. Last episode I gave it a 9.8 but this episode gets a full 10/10 perfect score. This is so far the best episode for me.

Hands up, up who loves Death?
eldrytch6 August 2022
I was very fond of Death in the comic, so had reservations about the changes made here. Fears entirely groundless, Death is as wonderful as ever. So nice that they take the time to introduce her character. By the end of the chapter, you feel genuine affection for her.

The story of the guy given immortality resonated with me for many years, and the show handled this brilliantly also. Loved the fact that some tosser was still in the pub banging on 400 later about "the trouble with the dole....."

My two favorite issues of the comic series
darmal5-16 August 2022
As much of a reader as I am, I must admit that seeing them performed here has provided inexplicable joy. "The Sound of her Wings" was an emotional overload and well done (I'm even glad they stopped one scene before the mother's anguish!). The adventures of Hob Gadling benefitted from the visual aspect of the storytelling too. Both tales hit their correct beats and worked well as a compelling episode of this new Sandman series.

Contemplative reflection.
W011y4m56 August 2022
In this quieter installment, "The Sandman" takes a much needed break in order to explore the lasting ramifications of the previous 5 episodes & in doing so, provides the story with a brilliant opportunity to flesh out the protagonist's personality / history - showing what the emotional consequences were of his seemingly unending isolation.

Hence, we as an audience are gifted with the time to see Morpheus' vulnerability - which he so often feels the need to hide from others - & witness how that perpetual loneliness has affected him, over the years. It's therefore not at all surprising to learn that he's struggling to readapt to what his old life once was - after being held captive for more than a century - but in reconnecting with those who matter to him, he's able to re-establish his identity, reminding himself of who he is & what his purpose may be - & in watching him actively partake in deciding the future he wants for himself & who he chooses to be in this poignant tale, his character is developed beautifully (in an organic way), ensuring that however the narrative progresses, the people featured within it also avoid stagnation.

An outstanding episode.
ozanbolulu7 August 2022
This episode contains two of my favorite issues from the first two volumes of The Sandman graphic novels. Hob gadling and death are both two of my favorite characters in this epic saga and this episode does both of the characters justice. Hob Gadling was so, so likable and fun to watch & Death going around taking people's life was also a treat to watch. It was a great character study for Dream, too, since the two characters in the episode show a side of Morpheus that was not shown before.

Overall, an amazing episode. The contrast with the last episode is also outstanding. This episode is the greatest indicator of what's to come in the next seasons because the two issues this episode adapts are the tone that the series continue in.

Best episode so far
boomer-kris7 August 2022
Beautifully written! The storyline is unique and the actors do it justice. I was afraid this would be a campy comic book series. I'm going to watch the entire series and hopefully I can leave a rating that's better than the one star that someone left!

this show is breathtaking
gs-subs6 August 2022
This show is breathtaking, the previous episode to this one was superb, going from an unknown premise of what would happen to a dark twist, but this episode had me in tears, there is a certain part in this episode that actually goes there, no holds barred, very raw and viceral which should shake every human on earth, not just parents...I never thought a tv show would do this, its done in such a beautiful way, that even the most hardened person should shed a tear.

Kudos to the team, just kudos.

Faithful re-telling of an excellent story arc
kilo-rom7 August 2022
This was one of my favourite stories from the original series, one that showed a bit of humanity from Dream of the Endless.

So I was very happy to see it as part of this series.

And its been brilliantly re-told here, it could be viewed as a bit sedate in comparison to the previous episode but still marvellously told and it doesn't feel ploddy.

Storytelling at its best.
slimeyboy257 August 2022
An amazing episode of TV, that sucks you in and before you know it has gone. The true sign of a well written show is one where's your don't look away for the whole episode and think it's gone in a few minutes. Watching Morpheus and Death stroll through Richmond captured more emotion than many films and series fail to capture in hours. Beautifully acted in a low key manner that let the story flow, the script simple but captivating. Want to watch it all over again.

Beautiful episode about the human condition
critic-97-41765717 August 2022
I just can't praise this episode enough. In this day and age, with all our negativity and divisiveness, hatred and hostility, I'm often left with the sense that we are doomed to self-destruction. The stories of this episode are about hope, connection, and the value of humans - that maybe we are redeemable as a species - that there maybe is enough there for the universe to appreciate.

Just loved this episode so much.

Warning: Spoilers
So I've never written a review here before but this episode just blew me away. First half is very well done, but the second half featuring Hob was amongst the best television I've ever seen. Just fascinating, I've rewatched it like 6 times. Wonderful performances all around. Ferdinand Kingsley is so impressive. Biggest disappointment was not seeing the character in other episodes. I really hope they make a series from his perspective, I'd watch it!!

First half weak, second half excellent
jpublichero22 August 2022
The first half of the episode is poor, with what feels like box-ticking casting choices and a meandering plot with easily telegraphed story beats. The actress playing Death is unsuitable for the role and displays none of the beauty, playfulness and mystery that the cartoons suggested.

The second half of the episode is fantastic. Perfect casting, an interesting focal character and a well paced plot.

Six out of ten for the excellent second half but a poor first.

Two for the price of one!
teroden12 August 2023
This episode was two separate stories, and the first story I would have rated zero or less. The depiction of Death was trite and predictable, and copied from one of a thousand such portrayals. And...it went on and on and on. I guess the writer or director or someone thought they could mask this banality by making Death into a woman sexpot in skin-tight clothes, but that's just an insult. My points go to the exchange between Dream and Hob Gatling which ends in friendship after a few centuries. Kingsley is great in this role! I'm not sure the cameo appearances by Desire relate to anything of substance, but we all know why they crop up every now and then. You guys just love pushing an agenda.

Impeccable!
adamayatomar5 August 2022
A break from the main plot never felt so welcome, an absolutely beautiful take on immortality, that started as a drunk jest, and ended as a rather oddly sweet friendship. We see a side of Dream that we haven't yet in his character development, who knew he was such a softie.

We see the highs and lows of man, and what it takes to truly be immortal, and the tradeoffs one would have to make,

Additionally, we see old Willy in his youth, and the background to the Constantine plot line. All in all, delicious.

The best episode
scythilegaming10 August 2022
I have never read the novels or anything els. So this is my first exposure to the franchise.

This episode was easily the best in the show. Dream was already cool but he didn't have alot a development. That is until now. Not only do we see a different side to dream, but 2 of my favourite characters in the show are introduced here. Death and hob. Both very interesting characters, bringing alot of emotional depth to dream and to the show in general. Their impact on our protagonist is integral to his arch.

This episode proved this show has great potential, I really hope it continues to explore the characters like this episode did.

The only problem I had with this episode is that I thought dreams older hair styles were a bit goofy. But other than that, it was great.

Best Episode
lepoeticus9 August 2022
I felt the overall pace, character introduction or development were uneven, sometimes really off in the whole season. This episode of Lady Death and a human immortal gives a whole new twist. The pace is perfect, the actors are convincible, Sandman shows a tiny bit of development and the human immortal is a joy to watch.

If you didn't get warm with the series at all, try this one.

Perfectly translated from the graphic novel
darrenkaminsky9 August 2022
So far, it's the episode that best captures the soul of the graphic novel and it gave me the same chills. It melds two separate issues, but ones that are joined thematically as the first part of the episode shows the way that Death's power is a gift, and the 2nd part of the shows where Death's gift meets Dream's, as a source of inspiration.

Both are beautifully rendered.

Profound and thought provoking episode. The production values continue to be excellent, the costumes were fantastic, as was the score. Traveling through time with Dream and his companion is compelling, and the episode provides some much needed levity.

I'm so happy that they've kept the spirit and mood of the source material. The Sandman is a cherished series for me, and seeing the care and thought put into this episode was wonderful. I bawled like a baby at the end!

A perfect adaptation.
caitlinsun9 August 2022
Two of the most beloved stories from the original comics. Not only are they perfectly adapted for the screen, but they are the keystone for the entire first season. I was seriously holding my breath when I heard they were finally bringing The Sandman to the screen...super relieved they didn't butcher my childhood.

A new entry into the Pantheon of great TV show episodes......
bknkmkfk9 August 2022
Wow, just wow. This episode grabs you in the first 5 minutes and doesn't let go, taking you on an incredible journey through the wilderness of emotions. I'm trying sooooo hard not to binge the entire series and stretch it out as best I can. Episodes like this make it virtually impossible though, I just want to see the next piece of genius.

It certainly earns its place in that rarest of groups; magic dust sprinkled episodes of the rarest quality. Alongside The Sopranos 'Pine Barrens', Lost 'Pilot', Breaking Bad 'Ozymandias', The Leftovers 'Book of Kevin' and ER 'On the Beach'. The list goes on and 'The Sound of Her Wings' is firmly ensconced in place.

Aimless but poignant. This episode had two very different parts, though both conveyed poignant emotions reflecting on the human condition. The end felt like an afterthought.

Please talk (down) at me some more.
Zevve24 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
After that tedious first 20 minutes with Dream being talked at by an insufferable and cliche character, with some rehashed "I'm death" dialogue and moments we've read and seen a hundred times in fantasy, the rest was fascinating. I'm sure it's a pure coincidence that after centuries of life, wherein he must have had literally hundreds of run ins with people, the immortal guy is shown confronted by an anachronistically aggressive but of course classy knife weilding murder woman who orders the men about. I wish I could divide my rating into 2. At the end there was an ominous hint of yet another self indulgent and equally uninteresting character. I fear a downward spiral is starting.

Beautiful and heart wrenching
milliemacdonald417 August 2022
I might struggle to reach the wordcount here, because it is so hard to describe the beauty of this episode without including spoilers. The events of the episode for the characters were great, but the themes of the episode and the way they were handled were amazing. I do not usually deal with reminders of such things very well, but this made my heart ache in a good way.

I will be watching this episode again, even if I don't rewatch the rest of the show. It's just beautiful.

Death, Immortality & Friendship
jadaabdol11 August 2022
A beautiful episode, you even think "Will i die this peaceful? I hope death will be that kind and beautiful to me" And the immortal man and his friendship with dream, that last scene was very beautiful and touching He kept on waiting his friend, and he was right to wait for him.
