A reporter dies while Brenda is helping him profile the LAPD, but she's barred from participating in the case by Pope until the department psychiatrist clears her for duty. At home, she and Fritz are expecting her parents for a visit.

Storyline

Deputy Chief Brenda Johnson has a lot going on in her life. Having survived the attack by the serial killer, the police psychiatrist has determined that she is not yet fit for duty and Chief Pope forbids her to become involved in any investigations. Her parents are coming to visit, but she has yet to tell them that she and Fritz are engaged. Finally, she and her fiancé have yet to find a house. Pope orders her and Sgt. Gabriel to accompany a local TV journalist who has offered to do a piece on how the police department is under-resourced. Soon after setting off on their ride-along their car, with Gabriel, Brenda, the journalist and his camera operator are attacked by a sniper who puts 21 shots into their car in a matter of seconds. Brenda assumes that she was the intended victim but in reviewing video of the crime scene thinks that someone else may have been the target.
