- Forced to leave their country, Dounia and her grandparents set off in search of a new home. As she travels around the world in search of asylum, Dounia encounters many people and lives many great adventures. And when she encounters an obstacle that seems insurmountable, the wisdom of the ancient world comes to her rescue in the form of the nigella seeds of her grandmother.
- The Story of a Little Girl Dounia is 6 years old. She goes to school in a small village in Canada. She is a little girl full of joy and imagination. She has big dreamy eyes, a big smile, and deep, dense hair, like a night full of stars. Like all little girls, she loves life, playing, learning and discovering. But despite her smile, there is a touch of sadness in her eyes. Dounia is a little refugee. She comes from far away and brings a whole world with her. With poetry and sensitivity, without overlooking the dark moments, the Dounia series tells the story of the trauma of war and uprootedness, while exploring the themes of identity and of dialogue between cultures. As painful as it is for Dounia and her grandparents to be uprooted from their land, their story of migration from Syria to Canada is rich with luminous moments and encounters.
A Story of Migration The story of Dounia is unique but the story of Dounia is also the story of all refugees. Forced to leave their war-destroyed city, burned to the ground, Dounia, her grandfather Jeddo Darwich and her grandmother Téta Mouné take the migrant's route. But before leaving Aleppo and their house - once wonderful, now destroyed - Dounia takes some nigella seeds which she keeps preciously in her pocket. The journey of the refugees is strewn with all kinds of pitfalls: closed borders, the sea, the cold, moments of doubt and despair. But in the face of the most difficult obstacles, Dounia will make good use of her prodigious seeds. Drawing from the roots of Dounia's culture, each of the seeds will liberate a magical force - and above all Dounia's powerful imagination - that will allow the characters to overcome the obstacle. The nigella seeds thus represent the original culture of Dounia, its roots, rich and marvellous, contained in very small things which will allow her to overcome life's obstacles, transform them positively and move forward. At the end of the journey, when she finally arrives at her new home in Canada, Dounia will be able to plant the last small seed of nigella, which will grow and give a beautiful blue flower, full of new seeds, bearer of hope.
A Multiplatform Device The story of Dounia will also be told in the form of an illustrated album, to be published by Bayard Canada in the Spring of 2021. The book will be complemented by a mobile application which will allow young readers and their parents to delve even deeper into the world of the universe of the little Dounia.
