29 December 2011 8:16 AM, PST | ComicBookMovie.com | See recent ComicBookMovie news »

I haven't heard about this one before, but it seems that the director of Predators, Nimrod Antal, is working on a new science fiction project called Repossession of Max the Companion Robot, which sounds very much like a cross between Blade Runner and Repo Men. Thanks to Quiet Earth, we now have the official synopsis and some first concept art for the film. Check it out below: Set in a future in which robots are as ubiquitous as pets are today. And if you don’t make your robot loan payments, your mechanical best friend will be repossessed by people like Lee, a repo agent who refuses to see robots as sentient individuals and has built up large debts betting on robo-races. RZA and Misty Upham Board ‘Django Unchained’; Brian Cox Enters ‘Dog Fight’

2 November 2011 8:08 PM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

One of the best collaborations Quentin Tarantino has been a part of in the past decade is, surprisingly, with Wu-Tang Clan member RZA. The musician did a fantastic job composing and compiling music for Kill Bill, and the filmmaker produced his upcoming directorial debut, The Man with the Iron Fists. How that latter effort turns out is still up for review, but the first time around went pretty smoothly.

They’ll be conspiring once more, as ShowBlitz reports that RZA and Frozen River‘s Misty Upham are joining Tarantino‘s Spaghetti Western. He’ll play “Thaddeus, a violent slave working on a Mississippi plantation,” and she’ll appear as “a trading post/bar owner named Minnie.”

Nothing too big, but I am happy to see RZA get a good role — mainly because much of his (good) acting work has been in less-than-stellar films like Funny People, Repo Men, and The Next Three Days. »

Weekend Report: 'Puss' Purrs Softly

31 October 2011 4:55 PM, PDT | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

With over $34 million, Puss in Boots scored the top Halloween weekend ever, though it was notably lower than nearly all other DreamWorks Animation titles. Justin Timberlake and Johnny Depp also underwhelmed, though Timberlake's In Time drastically outperformed Depp's The Rum Diary. Even with all three titles missing the mark to various degrees, overall box office was up around 10 percent from the same frame last year when Saw 3D let with $22.5 million. Puss in Boots's debut was the lowest for a DreamWorks Animation movie since 2006's Flushed Away, though that was a co-production with Aardman Animation. It's also less than half of Puss's last big screen appearance, Shrek Forever After, which opened to $70.8 million last May. It did at least manage to barely top Saw III ($33.6 million) for top Halloween weekend opening ever. According to distributor Paramount Pictures, the audience was 59 percent female and 55 percent 25 years and older. Additionally, 35 percent of the audience was Hispanic. »

New Release: Catch .44 DVD and Blu-ray

31 October 2011 3:54 PM, PDT | Disc Dish | See recent Disc Dish news »

Release Date: Dec. 20, 2011

Price: DVD $26.98, Blu-ray $29.99

Studio: Anchor Bay

Malin Akerman works hard for the money in Catch .44.

Bruce Willis (Red) and Oscar-winner Forest Whitaker (Repo Men) star in the 2011 independent crime film Catch .44, written and directed by Aaron Harvey (The Evil Woods).

The movie’s story revolves around three bad-ass beauties who work in a strip joint (Couples Retreat’s Malin Akerman, Twilight’s Nikki Reed and Deborah Ann Woll from TV’s True Blood) and their plot to double-cross their equally bad-ass boss (Willis) when he sends them on a job to hijack a shipment of drugs making its way up from Mexico. Well, wouldn’t you know that the double-crosses lead to triple-crosses and all other manner of betrayals involving a crusty trucker, a nutty short-order cook and a psychotic hit man disguised as a highway patrolman (Whitaker)!
