Blu-ray Review: Lovely Molly

Lovely Molly

Stars: Gretchen Lodge, Johnny Lewis, Alexandra Holden | Written by Eduardo Sanchez, Jamie Nash | Directed by Eduardo Sanchez

Known predominantly for the massive hit that was The Blair Witch Project (one of the highest-grossing independent films of all time no less), Eduardo Sanchez returns with what is his fourth directorial effort since that films groundbreaking debut and his best movie yet. Now I’ll admit I wasn’t a huge fan of Blair Witch, I enjoyed it for what it was but the obnoxious cast always put me off, however Sanchez’s 2006 directorial follow-up Altered was a stroke of genius that undeservedly shoved out as a direct to DVD release. But now he’s back, surpassing all expectations with Lovely Molly.

The film starts off innocently enough, with the titular Molly (Lodge) and her newlywed husband Tim (Lewis) moving into the old family homestead to start their married life together. »

Steven Spielberg’s classic thriller has been painstakingly restored from the original film elements. Amity Island has never been so beautiful. The movie itself seems to improve with age, with amazing performances and scenes that still manage to unnerve — Susan Backlinie’s death at the beginning is truly one of the most horrifying ever portrayed onscreen. Making this a true “special edition” is the long-awaited release of The Shark Is Still Working, an expansive documentary on the making and the impact of the 1975 film. All of the surviving cast and crew are interviewed along with several minutes of never-before-seen footage.

Special Features:

*Digitally remastered and fully restored from high resolution 35mm original film elements.

Movie Review: ‘Lovely Molly’

8 August 2012 5:49 AM, PDT | Destroy the Brain | See recent Destroy the Brain news »

Eduardo Sánchez and Daniel Myrick have had an interesting trajectory.  They co-directed The Blair Witch Project thirteen years ago, that “found footage” granddaddy which would prove not only to be an incredible success, but a great inspiration to genre filmmakers a decade later.  Love it or hate it, Blair Witch is a milestone whose lasting impact can’t be ignored.  While Myrick has made a few Dtv clunkers, Sánchez has managed to make two Dtv gems — Altered, a dark horror-comedy about alien abduction revenge, and Seventh Moon, a hand-held camera honeymoon nightmare in China.  Worth checking out.  So, how does his latest effort stack up?

Lovely Molly combines a traditional style with found-footage elements through a handi-cam Molly carries around with her.  There’s usually a dumb excuse as to why the characters are carrying around a camera while they’re freaked out.  Molly’s isn’t really that important, »

Review: Lovely Molly

23 June 2012 4:37 AM, PDT | Shadowlocked | See recent Shadowlocked news »

After 2008's disastrous Seventh Moon, the Director of The Blair Witch Project bravely returns to the horror genre with a tried and tested formula. Teaming up with his Altered and Seventh Moon writing partner, Jamie Nash, he attempts to emulate the success of his first feature in reusing the found footage technique to crank up the tension...

“Whatever happened, it wasn’t me…. I’m not in control any more…”

...sobs a young girl holding a knife to her neck. In stark contrast to this arresting opening, the action shifts to the joyous atmosphere of the titular character’s wedding day. From home video footage to the taut shaky-cam start, Sánchez momentarily moves away from amateur film, allowing us to see the first days of Tim and Molly’s married life. Sinister music gradually becomes louder to signify a change in mood and a close-up of a dust sheet covering »

Blair Witch Project's Eduardo Sanchez brings haunted house twist to Lovely Molly

21 June 2012 4:22 PM, PDT | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Eduardo Sanchez helped to refresh the horror genre and kickstart the current wave of 'found footage' releases when he co-wrote and co-directed 1999's The Blair Witch Project.

He continued in that vein with Altered and Seventh Moon and is now filming his newest venture Exists, in which a group of friends are stalked by Bigfoot.

Meanwhile, his most recent completed project is about to scare its way into UK cinemas.

Lovely Molly is directed by Sanchez and co-penned with Jamie Nash. It arrives on screens on June 29, following several festival appearances.

The official synopsis is included here along with the trailer, the poster (above) and a selection of stills.

Official synopsis

When newlywed Molly Reynolds (Gretchen Lodge) returns to her long-abandoned family home, reminders of a nightmarish childhood begin seeping into her new life. A malevolent force, whether her own haunted past or some supernatural thing, tirelessly seeks to overwhelm her. »

Lovely Molly Trailer Arrives Online

1 April 2012 5:01 PM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

The Blair Witch Project's co-director Eduardo Sanchez has struggled to follow-up that surprise success in the decade since it hit. His subsequent Altered and Seventh Moon went straight to video, but his fortunes have improved. Lovely Molly will shortly invade cinema screens, and the trailer has just arrived to shakily follow you around. It's strange to think now what a novelty Blair Witch's found-footage schtick was back in 1999. Since then it's had its thunder well and truly stolen, not least by the Paranormal Activitys, which seem to have some echoes here (a ghost that follows you from house to house; a lead character that may be posessed - the film's original title was Posession). So that's a bit of a problem for a film trumpeting that it's, "From the filmmakers that started it all".The idea that Lovely Molly will "redefine horror once again" is perhaps a bit of a stretch, »

Exclusive Poster Debut for Eduardo Sanchez's Lovely Molly

19 March 2012 10:00 PM, PDT | shocktillyoudrop.com | See recent shocktillyoudrop news »

Since The Blair Witch Project in 1999, Eduardo Sanchez - one half of that film's creative team - has made a deliberate effort to dabble in various sub-genres and not get locked into one particular subject matter.  Sure, he's no stranger to the supernatural - especially with Blair Witch and Seventh Moon, but he also tackled aliens in the impressive and overlooked Altered.

Next, he takes on possession in Lovely Molly, a film that garnered positive buzz at SXSW this month.  Image Entertainment releases the film in a limited theatrical run on May 18th and we've scored an exclusive look at the poster.

10 SXSW Soundtracks To Look Out For Including Scores By Members Of Pearl Jam, Vampire Weekend, Menomena, Tortoise & More

8 March 2012 11:31 AM, PST | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

SXSW is barely 24 hours away from starting (catch up with part one and part two of our preview pieces here), and at this point, it's important to be reminded that one of the things that makes the festival unique is a particular focus on the crossover between music and film, something that's been a special interest of ours since the very earliest days of The Playlist. SXSW doesn't just have a whole sidebar dedicated to music documentaries (with this year's batch including films centered on LCD Soundsystem, Paul Simon and Big Star), and a music festival that runs alongside, but the films screened seem to attract a disproportionate number of scores by indie and rock musicians.

And with more and more names who broke out from the pop and rock world -- from veteran composers like Danny Elfman and Clint Mansell to newbies like Trent Reznor and The Chemical Brothers -- moving into composition, »
