Letters From An Indian Clerk
a_baron3 September 2017
The name Sultan Khan is fairly well known, at least in chess circles. The name of another Indian genius of the early Twentieth Century, less so. Srinivasa Ramanujan died nine years before Sultan Khan won the first of his three British Chess Championships. Unlike his countryman who although retiring early lived to a reasonable age, Ramanujan was only thirty-two when he succumbed to illness, but his work lives on. A rare talent, he was invited to Trinity College, Cambridge after bombarding the leading English mathematicians of the day with his equations

This 1987 documentary speaks to contemporary mathematicians who explain both his achievements and failings, as well as his elderly widow. Long after his death, Ramanujan has been so influential in his field that in 1997 a journal was established devoted to his work.
