Let me begin this review by saying that I know that changes are made when books and book series are filmed. I know filmmakers do make changes and sometimes they succeed in an amazing way (Game of Thrones and LotR are excellent), but they also fail miserably (Legend of the Seeker is total waste of money).
The Shannara Chronicles is one of those series that are just so frustratingly bad and hair raisingly horrible that you can only wonder what on earth the filmmakers were thinking when they butchered a classic adult fantasy novel and turned it into Twilight-esque young adult crap with soap opera plot twists.
The Elfstones of Shannara is an excellent epic fantasy novel and has a good story that unfolds beautifully as the events rush towards the fantastic and a bit unexpected ending. I was horrified when I noticed that the scriptwriters had *butchered* the original story beyond recognition by making too many unnecessary and annoying changes. The soap opera elements have nothing to do with the source material and don't make any sense to fans of the novel, so they should never have been added to this series. The original story is full of adventure and has moments that could've been fleshed more by giving room to the characters and their backgrounds, but unfortunately MTV hasn't done so.
The Elfstones of Shannara could've been a fantastic TV series if it had been made with passion towards the source material (yes, it's possible to do so, because for example, GoT is amazing!), but unfortunately the scriptwriters seem to have wanted to ruin the story. I do hope that HBO or AMC will someday consider re-filming this series and will show respect towards the source material, because MTV has failed to do so. This series can be seen as a cautionary example of how no to film adult fantasy novels.
If you're familiar with the Shannara novels, please, avoid this fantasy badness at all costs, because you'll only feel anger and frustration when you begin to watch it. I do hope that viewers have enough sense to avoid it and won't help the filmmakers butcher other Shannara novels by Terry Brooks.
This series is awful is every sense of the word. The only reason I'm giving this travesty one star is because of its NZ scenery. The NZ landscapes look amazing. Unfortunately, everything else is pure torture. This series will most like please only those who love Xena and Hercules and expect low B movie quality from fantasy productions.
Thank you, MTV, for totally butchering one of the best classic fantasy novels!
