Storyline

At the end of every summer, the children of a Christian community from a suburb of New Jersey attend Camp Hope. They travel deep into the woods far from any distractions the world provides. Here, the children are taught the ways of the Lord, the perils of the flesh, and the horror of the Devil. A charismatic priest leads them in their training. But, he unknowingly has brought something with him, something evil. What was supposed to be a safe place, a spiritual retreat has now turned into a nightmare that not even faith can end. Dear God, please deliver me from bad movies such as this...amen.
16 August 2011 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

I think this movie was filmed in 2006 or 2007 and then released in 2010 under the title Camp Hope and then renamed Camp Hell. I don't know the whole story behind all the hoo-haa on this movie and quite frankly, I really don't care. It's supposed to be the writer/director's true account of what happened to him one summer at a Christian camp or something along those lines. If this movie is based on a true story, then I'm guessing he's in therapy now or making some people drink some kool-aid in a basement while wearing robes. And if you're watching it for Jesse Eisenberg, than you can watch the first 10 minutes, watch his cameo and turn it off.

I'm not even going to give you guys all the names of the characters and the usual stuff because they story here is simple. A kid (Eisenberg) more or less curses a priest (Davison) for not being able to help him. The priest goes to his annual Christian summer camp to spew garbage onto young, impressionable minds and something evil hides, lurks in the shadows all because of the priest. There are about two or three main kids at the camp. Delaney and McCarthy are the parents of the main kid. Connor Paolo plays the rebel kid who brings a Spawn comic to bible camp. Evil finally rears it's ugly head near the end of the movie, but it's all pretty pointless and uneventful.

Extremely slow showing here. It's more along the lines of a teenage soap opera than a horror movie. If you're looking for the devil to pop out and start slashing up some kids, you'll have to look elsewhere. He does a lot of hiding and breathing hard in the bushes and not much else. We see him in some dreams that the kids are having -- and those get pretty intense, but all in all, it's a very slow-paced film.

No qualms about the acting, it's mediocre and tolerable throughout. No one really stood out and no one was so bad that it made this movie unbearable to watch. No, the only real horror we see in this movie is what the kids have to endure from the priest, counselors and the ways of the bible camp. It shows an overly-aggressive approach of teaching teenagers about God, religion and sin. It's a real snoozefest, amen.
