Rachel Weisz And Director Catherine Hardwicke Join Miss You Already

22 April 2014 2:49 PM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Rachel Weisz and Toni Collette are two fine actors who should have made a deeper impression in Hollywood by now. Both bring their A-game to each film they are in, but they do not always pick the right projects. Occasionally though, we see a masterful performance (Weisz in The Deep Blue Sea, Collette on Showtime’s The United States of Tara) that reminds us of their talents. Now, both actresses are attached to Miss You Already, a drama following two best friends going through an emotional crisis.

Collette has been linked to this project since 2012, when Jennifer Aniston was signed on. Weisz, however, is only now coming on board to take Aniston’s role, as one of the forty-something friends who gets diagnosed with breast cancer, while Collette is a woman who becomes pregnant for the first time and starts a family. Both are lifelong friends torn apart by the changing world around them. »

Rachel Weisz Joins 'Miss You Already' With Toni Collette, Catherine Hardwicke Takes Over Director's Chair

22 April 2014 11:34 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Some movies kick around in development, trying to get made. "Miss You Already" is one of those movies. It first surfaced back in 2012,  when Jennifer Aniston signed up to star with Paul Andrew Williams ("London To Brighton," "Unfinished Song") directing his Brit List script he co-wrote with Morwenna BanksToni Collette joined not too long after, but then everything stalled out. Now, two years later, the project is back on with some big changes. Collette is still on board, but Aniston is out, and Rachel Weisz is in, while Catherine Hardwicke has replaced Williams in the director's chair. And suddenly, we're much more interested in this one. Said to be in the vein of "Beaches," the story follows two best friends whose relationship ruptures when one becomes pregnant and the other becomes ill. The script was originally London-based, but has apparently been broadened to include other U.K. cities.  Like »

Gravity: stunningly accomplished space survival adventure: heartstopping and heartbreaking; the best film of 2013; just don’t call it science fiction [my review] [at Amazon UK Instant Video]

I caught up with…

Odd Thomas: it feels smaller and more rushed — and less plausible — than it should, but Anton Yelchin is charming, and the snappy comic tone sometimes works [my review] [at Amazon UK Instant Video]

Behind the Candelabra: utterly riveting true story of showman Liberace’s tormented relationship with a much younger lover, with equal measures of hilarity and tragedy; Michael Douglas and Matt Damon are at their very best [at Amazon UK Instant Video] The Big Year: pleasantly sentimental flick about life, the universe, and everything… and birdwatching; charming performances by Owen Wilson, Steve Martin, and Jack Black [my review] [at Amazon UK Instant Video] Mud: Matthew McConaughey shines as the tragic outsider in a poignant Southern coming-of-age tale [at Amazon UK Instant Video] Song for Marion »

streaming now, before it’s on dvd

All Is Lost: gripping tale of adventure and survival on the high seas, with an excellent and unexpected performance from Robert Redford [at Amazon Instant Video] Blue Is the Warmest Color: there’s nothing particularly surprising in this French romantic melodrama… not even the tediously obvious 15-minute all-nude lesbian fuckfest [my review] [at Amazon Instant Video] Ender’s Game: the Big Sf Ideas of this strange mashup of Starship Troopers and Harry Potter — gifted kids go to fascist military school! — seem positive only if your heart is made of stone [my review] [at Amazon Instant Video]

Awards Season Continues With Visual Effects, Sound Mixing And Makeup Nominations

14 January 2014 6:41 PM, PST | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Today was a busy day for some of the smaller guilds with the Visual Effects Society, the Cinema Audio Society, and the Makeup and Hairstylists Guilds all announcing their nominations for 2013.

First, we have the Ves, whose main category to look at is “Outstanding Visual Effects in a Visual Effects-Driven Feature Motion Picture,” where we find Gravity and four other nominees that are just going to have to be happy with the fact that they got nominated. This is perhaps the easiest category to call in the entirety of awards season, and I don’t mean just here, but for the Oscar as well (Last year’s winner, Life of Pi, easily took this category before going on to claim the Oscar). It’s true that films like The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and Star Trek Into Darkness had outstanding effects as well, but nothing even came close to the amazing, »
