I Love You Phillip Morris (2009) Poster

In the last courtroom scene, Steven's lawyer is played by the real-life Phillip Morris.
Steven tells Phillip that Friday the 13th is his lucky day. Several of the key events of the movie are shown happening on Friday 13th.
The film is based on the real life story of Steven Jay Russell.
Had already made more than US$18 million internationally (exceeding its US$13 million budget) before it opened in the United States.
Jim Carrey shaved his hairline back because he thought of his character Steven Russell as a very cerebral person.
While on set in New Orleans and filming at the Orleans Parish Prison, one of the extras dressed as an OPP inmate was arrested by a real OPP Jail guard after leaving the set in costume to put belongings in his personal vehicle.
The playing of the song "The Marriage of Figaro" by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart at the end of the film is likely a nod to Shawshank Redemption (1994) which is a prison-based film as well.
Jim Carrey's Character Steven Russell says near the end of the film "Well maybe this is his plan. Maybe he's like a mean little boy with a magnifying glass and I'm just a defenseless little ant", In response to Leslie Mann's character claiming God has a plan for him. This is most likely a nod to Jim Carrey's film, Bruce Almighty (2001) in which he says a similar quote about God.
During the scene where jims character walks through the station asking how people are doing, one extra replies with "shrivelled and to the left" which is most likely a nod at Jim Carreys earlier film of Liar Liar when he replies the same answer when asked hows it hanging.

The trivia items below may give away important plot points.

Based on true events (the real Steven Jay Russell escaped from prison five times without ever hurting anyone), but the timeline has been drastically changed from actual events. Russell actually used stolen civilian clothing plus a walkie-talkie and feigned having Aids to get out of jail before ever meeting Phillip Morris. He did feign Aids again, however, after living with Morris for some time in order to be with him again. It worked. Russell is now serving a 144 year sentence under heightened security.
In the scene where Steven (Jim Carrey) jumps off the parking building roof top, the ledge he jumps from says "No Jumping".
