Annapurna Gives Two-Picture Deal to David O. Russell

1 hour ago | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

If I had a massive fortune to play with, I would probably do what Megan Ellison has been doing with her production company Annapurna. She gives out decently sized budgets to filmmakers with a vision, resulting in some terrific films like Her and Zero Dark Thirty. It makes me happy producers out there are still willing to develop and make films with a unique point of view, even if they do not always appeal to me (i.e. Spring Breakers). Last year, Annapurna teamed up with David O. Russell for American Hustle, a film that was met with a lot of backlash that I still thoroughly enjoyed (it even made my top 10 of last year). Well, it looks as if the Russell/Ellison working relationship was a good one because Russell has signed up for a two-picture deal with Annapurna. There is no word yet on what those projects will end up being, »

Megan Ellison back in the David O. Russell business with two-picture Annapurna deal

2 hours ago | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Megan Ellison will stop at nothing until David O. Russell wins that Best Director Oscar. Ok, maybe that sounds a little desperate, but after throwing Russell the cash to make his swinging crime picture "American Hustle," Ellison appears even more invested in the writer-director's future. Word comes from Deadline that the artistic patron has made a two-picture deal with Russell through her company, Annapurna Pictures. Since its 2011 inception, Annapurna has financed passion projects from notable filmmakers in a la carte fashion. Ellison swooped in to save films like Paul Thomas Anderson's "The Master" and Bennett Miller's "Foxcatcher," while nurturing ambitious scripts from the get go, like Kathryn Bigelow's "Zero Dark Thirty," Harmony Korine's "Spring Breakers," Spike Jonze's "Her." A two-picture deal is a first for the company, a promise to back whatever Russell wants to do. What could be the next Annapurna/Russell collaboration? This past January, »

Jennifer Lawrence And Bradley Cooper Reunite In A Crop Of New Images From Serena

25 September 2014 1:51 PM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Two years after wrapping principal photography, we’re on the precipice of Serena landing in theatres – in the UK. Following a lengthy post-production process during which director Susanne Bier completed an additional two movies, the period drama is still a ways off landing in the Us. Does this suggest the editing suite woes are still too dangerous to unleash on the American public? Is the UK cinematic palette somehow more adept at coping with films that some reviewers have called a hot mess?

You’d think that reuniting Silver Linings Playbook stars Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper would be a shoo-in for the awards schedule. Cobbled together immediately after that flick, production was apparently going swimmingly. Until it wasn’t.

A Depression-era drama based on the novel by Ron Rash, it follows a young couple, Serena (Lawrence) and George Pemberton (Cooper), who run and own a successful timber mill in North Carolina during the 1920s. »

'Serena' Starring Jennifer Lawrence & Bradley Cooper Hits VOD Feb 26th, Theatrical March 27th; New Photos & Poster

Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper must like each other a lot. They’ve appeared together in three movies almost in a row: “Silver Linings Playbook,” “American Hustle” and now the upcoming and long-delayed “Serena” (which was actually shot before the 'Hustle', the 2nd David O. Russell collaboration, after 'Playbook'). “Jennifer is such a wonderful girl. We’ve had so much fun working together and I’m so proud of her success,” Cooper recently told a South Jersey Magazine. “She’s one of the most down-to-earth and unpretentious individuals you could ever meet, and it’s such a pleasure to spend time with her. Jennifer is incredibly talented and she’s one of those natural performers who are instinctively good at what they do.” The movie’s narrative revolves around the emotional turmoil resulting after Lawrence’s titular character discovers she is unable to bear children and takes her anger out »

Jennifer Lawrence & Bradley Cooper's 'Serena' Has a Release Date

25 September 2014 8:50 AM, PDT | Moviefone | See recent Moviefone news »

While international trailers for "Serena" have been out for a while now, there had been no word on a U.S. release date for the long-delayed Jennifer Lawrence-Bradley Cooper historical drama -- until now.

In an interview with Thompson on Hollywood, Magnolia Pictures president Eamonn Bowles revealed that the flick would finally make its stateside debut in early 2015. "Serena" will first be available via VOD on February 26, with a theatrical release planned for March 27.

"Serena" has been notorious for its slow production/release schedule, and was actually shot way back in 2012, between Cooper and Lawrence's other big screen collaborations, "Silver Linings Playbook" and "American Hustle." But for whatever reason, the film, helmed by Danish director Susanne Bier, was never completely finished, and no news about a release strategy ever came together.

Then, word of an international release plan broke, but there was no news on a U.S. »

Five actors who could play Deadpool instead of Ryan Reynolds

Thomas Roach with five actors who could play Deadpool instead of Ryan Reynolds….

The long awaited Deadpool movie has been greenlit and now has a release date of February 12th, 2016. It will likely go into production in the next few months but as yet there is still no confirmation that actor Ryan Reynolds, who played the character of Deadpool/Wade Wilson, in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, will reprise his role.

The actor was involved with shooting test footage which was released in July which was praised by fans. Many people liked the footage and liked what Reynolds had done with the character in under two minutes.  It is highly likely that Reynolds will be involved in the film but some people still question his casting.

I’ll admit I was not happy with how the character turned out in X-Men Origins: Wolverine but seeing Reynolds in the test footage gave me »

Genre Films Can Break the Oscar Norm

24 September 2014 8:37 AM, PDT | Scott Feinberg | See recent Scott Feinberg news »

By Anjelica Oswald

Managing Editor

Jake Gyllenhaal’s performance as a sleazy freelance TV reporter determined to go to any length in search of crime footage in Dan Gilroy’s Nightcrawler could get him “recognized as one of the most daring actors working in Hollywood today” and has been called some of the “best work of his career.” With this type of praise, award contention usually follows, but historically speaking, “genre films” don’t fare well at the Oscars. It’s not impossible for films that deviate from the Oscar norm — biopics, period pieces or dramas — to secure Oscar nominations for the actors involved, but looking back through the years, from 2000 to the present, shows that these films constitute a lower percentage of overall nominees.

Musicals are a type of “genre film” that actors have managed to score Oscar nominations for, though they have had more difficulty doing so since the late 60s. »

Tiff 2014: How Chris Rock, New Distribution Blood Fueled Film Deals

21 September 2014 10:58 AM, PDT | Deadline New York | See recent Deadline New York news »

As the final acquisition deals roll in on Toronto’s 2014 film festival movies, a couple of overriding themes emerged that bode well for the appetite for indie fare and have sellers smacking their lips for Afm, Sundance, Berlin and beyond. In a fest where Harvey Weinstein left his checkbook home and didn’t make a single splashy deal, I have never seen so many new players make statement buys at a festival than happened in Toronto.

The other intriguing development came on the fest’s biggest deal, when Paramount Pictures swooped into the auction of the Chris Rock-directed comedy Top Five, and blew buyers out of the water by paying $12.5 million for worldwide rights. It was the second straight fest where Paramount did this, after the studio made a precedent-setting pre-buy Cannes deal for the Denis Villeneuve-directed Amy Adams sci-fi film Story Of Your Life. Jennifer Lawrence & Bradley Cooper Star In New Photos Of Delayed Period Drama ‘Serena’

21 September 2014 7:15 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

“ ‘Serena’ was a fluke, really,” Bradley Cooper said in an interview last month. “Jennifer [Lawrence] was attached to it when we were doing ‘Silver Linings.’ And then I looked at it, and I knew Susanne [Bier], and it was, 'Why don’t we just do this together?' " Well, that fluke has turned into quite the controversial, long-delayed film, one that some have called a mess that “makes no sense,” while others have stood by it (including Magnolia, the film’s distributor). But there’s no denying the fact that “Serena” was completed almost two years ago and director Susanne Bier has shot and finished two entire film since (“Love Is All You Need” and “A Second Chance”). “Serena” is a Depression-era drama about newlyweds running a timber business in North Carolina, which is complicated when the wife cannot bear children. Cooper plays the husband, Lawrence the wife. “[Doing a period film] was part of my fascination, »

Oscars News: Jennifer Lawrence will not three-peat at Oscars with delay of 'Serena'

Lou Lumenick breaks news that the next Jennifer Lawrence-Bradley Cooper film "Serena" will not be eligible for the 2014 Oscars after all. It was going to be a long shot anyway based on the lack of buzz for the film, but it means Lawrence is completely out of contention for the first time in three years ("Silver Linings Playbook," 2012; "American Hustle," 2013). The Depression-era movie was filmed back in 2012 and has Cooper as a North Carolina lumber tycoon and Lawrence as his unhappy wife. The film will now screen at the London Film Festival in October and have a release plan only in Europe for the short term. While Lawrence can't three-peat at the Oscars this time, Cooper still has the Clint Eastwood film "American Sniper" film opening on Christmas Day. "Serena" Delayed As No-One Wanted It?

17 September 2014 3:59 PM, PDT | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Following the success of "Silver Linings Playbook," "American Hustle," "The Hangover" and "The Hunger Games," you'd think that any film starring Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper would become a 'must have' project for any distributor.

Throw in an award winning director like Susanne Bier ("In a Better World," "After the Wedding") and you can understand why interest would be high. Yet, no-one has been biting despite several screenings of several different cuts. Today, it was Magnolia Pictures that finally picked up the U.S. rights to the period drama without much fanfare says THR.

In fact, the trade goes so far as to say that Magnolia became a "default distributor" as no others wanted to take it and Magnolia's sister company 2929 Productions financed it. Magnolia is also skipping the awards season altogether and opting for an early 2015 release.

A buyer tells the trade "The film was so edited, it made no sense, »

In a development that feels more inevitable than surprising, Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass are in talks to get back into the Bourne business. The two had sent mixed messages over the years, ever since Jason Bourne disappeared in the murky East River at the end of The Bourne Ultimatum in 2007, with the major roadblock being Damon’s insistence that a reluctant Greenglass direct, while Universal handed the franchise over to writer-turned-director Tony Gilroy. What Really Happened to 'Serena,' Starring Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence

Back in 2012, before Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence co-starred in David O. Russell's Oscar-winning "Silver Linings Playbook" and its follow-up "American Hustle," the duo shot period drama "Serena," which was once going to star Angelina Jolie with director Darren Aronofsky.  Oscar-winning Danish auteur Susanne Bier ("A Better World") took the helm for producers Mark Cuban and Todd Wagner's 2929 Productions, and has been delayed trying to finish it. Based on Ron Rash's 2008 novel, the film is set in 1929 North Carolina and follows George and Serena Pemberton, ambitious newlyweds with their hearts set on a timber empire. They become obsessed with success, and their lives take a Shakespearean turn when Serena finds that she can't get pregnant and tries to harm her husband's illegitimate son. Why the delays?
