Morgan Freeman to Star in ‘Down to a Sunless Sea’

27 July 2015 6:22 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Morgan Freeman has signed on to star in action movie “Down to a Sunless Sea,” set up at Focus Features.

Focus has bought the script by David Gleeson. The logline is under wraps, but is said to be similar in tone to “Air Force One.” Producers are Bruce Cohen and Freeman’s Revelations, which is headed by Lori McCreary. CAA brokered the package deal.

Freeman starred in last year’s sci-fi hit “Lucy” with Scarlett Johansson and in “Ted 2.” He’ll be seen next year in “London Has Fallen” and the “Ben-Hur” remake.

Cohen’s producing credits include “Silver Linings Playbook,” “Milk” and “American Beauty.”

Gleeson was attached in 2013 to write a J.R.R. Tolkien biopic, “Tolkien,” for Fox Searchlight and Chernin Entertainment. Gleeson is repped by CAA and Warren Dern.

The news was first reported by Deadline Hollywood.

Morgan Freeman Heads Down To A Sunless Sea

27 July 2015 5:01 PM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Details are extremely sketchy at present, but the news just in is that Morgan Freeman has signed up for Focus Features' Down To A Sunless Sea. David Gleeson (The Front Line) wrote the screenplay. We know it's an action movie, but it seems unlikely that Freeman is taking the Taken route and breaking out a set of skills for the lead. Although that should totally happen. Rather, it's being touted as along the lines of Air Force One. Does that mean Freeman is playing a president again?Freeman's company Revelations is producing the project, along with Bruce Cohen (Silver Linings Playbook). There's no director yet named, but Gleeson has been known to shoot his own scripts in the past. We'll next see Freeman in the no doubt equally action-packed London Has Fallen, out in January. »

Review: 'True Detective' - 'Church in Ruins'

26 July 2015 8:06 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

A review of tonight's "True Detective" coming up just as soon as I find "Friends"... This week, on "Looking For Silver Linings From 'True Detective' Season 2": * The very busy Miguel Sapochnik (who also directed tonight's "Masters of Sex") did a fine job of making Ani's ordeal at the orgy seem every bit as nightmarish and suspenseful as intended, even if the idea of her going in there with only Paul and Ray as backup felt incredibly contrived and there only to set up that scenario where we had to fear so much for our heroine. * The score throughout that sequence was lush and melodramatic in a way that very much evoked the kinds of '40s and '50s La noir films where parties like this might take place (albeit ones presented in less explicit fashion than this). * This was a non-terrible episode for Vince Vaughn, and »

Marvel vs. Pixels: Weekend Box Office Will Be Fight to the Death Between Sandler Critical Dud and Ant-Man Rudd

24 July 2015 11:12 PM, PDT | Alt Film Guide | See recent Alt Film Guide news »

'Pixels' movie with Adam Sandler. 'Pixels' movie weekend box office: Adam Sandler vs. 'Ant-Man' Despite its underwhelming domestic box office debut last weekend, Marvel's Ant-Man may turn out to be the winner in North America this weekend (July 24–26, '15) thanks to another underwhelming debut: that of the Adam Sandler Pixels movie. According to weekend box office projections found at Variety, the Chris Columbus-directed Pixels is expected to open with $25 million from 3,723 locations – following a $10 million Friday take (including $1.5M from Thursday previews). If so, that'll place Adam Sandler's latest lowbrow comedy – now in 3D – on a par with Sandler domestic disappointments like Jack and Jill and Funny People. Deadline.com, for its part, is expecting $27-$28 million by Sunday evening. Sat., July 25, update: According to studio box office estimates, Pixels underperformed on Friday, taking in $9.2 million. That's below figures for Jack and Jill and, adjusted for »

Jennifer Lawrence Tees Up For Her Next Oscar Nom in the Joy Trailer

20 July 2015 2:00 PM, PDT | POPSUGAR | See recent BuzzSugar news »

Following massive success with Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle, David O. Russell has again teamed up with Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper for Joy, a movie about Joy Mangano, the woman who invented the Miracle Mop. "What a quaint little story," you might think. If this trailer is a good indication, Joy is anything but quaint. It's a rollicking preview filled with The Rolling Stones, guns, and some good old-fashioned sobbing sessions. You'll even see a glimpse of Orange Is the New Black's Dascha Polanco, in addition to Robert De Niro, Virginia Madsen, and Édgar Ramírez. The movie is out Christmas Day, and I highly suggest watching the trailer above. »

David Gordon Green Directing Boston Marathon Bombing Pic Stronger

17 July 2015 11:01 AM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Images from the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings are still seared into the hearts and minds of people around the world, and so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that multiple film projects about the terrorist attack are in the works. Today, Manglehorn director David Gordon Green has signed on to helm one such pic, titled Stronger and set to focus on Jeff Bauman, who lost both legs in the attack.

Lionsgate is behind the inspirational true story, which is based on the autobiographical book Bauman co-wrote with Bret Whitter.

Bauman was at the finish line of the marathon on April 15, 2013, waiting for his girlfriend to finish the annual race, when he was caught in the blast from a pressure cooker bomb left at the crowded event by terrorists Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. The explosion took both his legs. When he awoke in a nearby hospital, Bauman was able to identify »

Russell has become something of an award-season fixture and he’s up again with decade-spanning, Jennifer Lawrence-starring, genre-defying Joy – and we have two exclusive pictures for you.Originally thought of as a biopic of Miracle Mop inventor Joy Mangano, the film now takes its inspiration from various people – including Russell’s own mother – in telling the story of one woman’s fight through life. “We decided to make it about the interior life of her soul as she goes from the ages of 10 to into middle age,” says writer/director Russell. “And those who inspire her and those who kind of are obstacles to her in her own family – and in the cold world of business. That's ambitious for us.”Though Joy is the theme as well as the title and Jennifer Lawrence’s character, the film is a story »
