A producer on Twitter recently entreated critics not to craft Worst-of lists this year, and I couldn’t disagree more: Observers of film should absolutely be praising the best of cinema, but it’s only by remembering the shortcomings of the art form by which, ideally, artists can learn from their mistakes. And mistakes were definitely made this year:
10. (tie) “Peppermint”/”Proud Mary” /”Red Sparrow”: Can we have some strong screenplays to go with our strong female leads, please? This trashy trio of action sagas put guns in the hands of some of our most talented actresses but then forgot to supply them with things like character, motivation, or logic.
9. “Christopher Robin”: After dumping the last great “Winnie the Pooh” animated feature on a Harry Potter opening weekend, Disney added insult to injury by crafting this glum and tedious look at a grown-up Christopher (Ewan McGregor) in the throes of a midlife crisis.

Disney’s “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms” opened to a paltry $20.4 million ($58.5 million worldwide) last weekend, a box office bomb given its production budget of $130 million. But it is far from the first time a version of Tchaikovsky’s ballet has failed financially — and critically.
So why can’t Hollywood get “The Nutcracker” right? TheWrap spoke with three box office experts to find out.
But lets start with the sordid box office history of “The Nutcracker” on the big screen:
In 2010, Freestyle Releasing put out “The Nutcracker in 3D,” starring Elle Fanning, Richard Philipps and Richard E. Grant. It grossed only $195,000 (from 45 locations) its opening weekend, and was widely panned by critics.
Before that was “The Nutcracker,” released by Warner Bros. in 1993. It grossed just $2.2 million its opening weekend and received mixed reviews. Similarly, 1986’s “Nutcracker: The Motion Picture,” 1990’s “The Nutcracker Prince” and 1998’s “The IMAX Nutcracker” all underperformed at the box office.

Between now and doomsday, it’s unlikely that we’ll get a movie that will defile the work of Tchaikovsky and E.T.A. Hoffman more than 2010’s “The Nutcracker in 3D,” the movie that took the classic story and ballet and added Holocaust metaphors, Tim Rice-penned hip-hop lyrics, and a bizarre turn by Nathan Lane as Albert Einstein. But while it may not be quite as terrible, “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms” earns runner-up status on the list of worst cinematic “Nutcracker” misfires.
Maybe it was the massive reshoots — directorial credit is shared by Lasse Hallstrom, who shot the first go-round, and Joe Johnston — or perhaps the script by first-timer Ashleigh Powell was always muddled and convoluted, but the results are singularly dispiriting. Rather than harken back to an elegant, whimsical earlier period of history, this “Nutcracker” calls to mind the early 2010s, when the success of...

Nearly one year after picking up the script in a competitive bidding situation, Disney is moving forward with their live-action adventure The Nutcracker and the Four Realms. The Hollywood Reporter has word that the studio has hired Lasse Hallström to direct from the script by Ashleigh Powell. The project is adapted from the classic ballet by Peter Tchaikovsky, and the companion story The Nutcracker and the Mouse King by E.T.A. Hoffmann.
The classic tale follows a young girl named Clara, who receives a nutcracker doll from her godfather on Christmas Eve. After the clock strikes midnight, she is transported to a magical fantasy world, where she find herself caught in the middle of a war between gingerbread soldiers and a mouse army. Ashleigh Powell spent two years developing the script before it was picked up by Disney last year.

Other worldly. Out of time. Languid. Uncanny. Meditative. These are all fine and easy ways to describe the promo reel for veteran Russian-American director Andrei Konchalovsky's latest, The Postman's White Nights, which will be playing in competition at Venice early next month.Konchalovsky may be best known to Twitch readers as the director of the 1985 thriller Runaway Train, as well as the co-screenwriter with Andrei Tarkovsky on Andrei Rublev. Konchalovksy has certainly proven a versatile storyteller in his near six decades in the business, as this one is a big shift from his last, The Nutcracker in 3D. Check out the full synopsis and that gorgeous promo below.Separated from the outside world with only a boat to connect their remote village to the mainland, the...

Life Of Pi | West Of Memphis | Pitch Perfect | Boxing Day | Dabangg 2
Life Of Pi (PG)
(Ang Lee, 2012, Us) Suraj Sharma, Irrfan Khan, Ayush Tandon, Rafe Spall, 127 mins
All that was missing from Yann Martel's 2001 novel was the visuals, and boy does this provide them. In Lee's hands the tall tale of an Indian boy stranded on a lifeboat with a tiger is credible, captivating and, above all, ravishing to behold. It's rare to see big special effects seriously applied to something so non-generic, and the result is a one-off story teeming with life, colour and action – from gripping shipwreck action to close-up tiger terror to hallucinogenic ocean wonders.
West Of Memphis (15)
(Amy Berg, 2012, Nz/Us) 147 mins
Viewers of the Paradise Lost trilogy will already be familiar with the case of the West Memphis Three: teens accused, then convicted, of killing three young boys in a supposed Satanic ritual in 1993 despite highly questionable evidence.

Over the last couple of years, Elle Fanning has started to steal the thunder from her older sister Dakota – with solid performances in such artsy auteur efforts by Sofia Coppola (Somewhere) and her father Francis Ford Coppola (Twixt), along with her attention-grabbing turn in J.J. Abrams’ Super 8 (we’ll pretend The Nutcracker in 3D didn’t happen – like most people already do).

When the news broke last week that director Adam Shankman would be helming a new feature film version of The Nutcracker, fans of Shankman’s career could be excused for assuming the movie would evoke the classic ballet The Nutcracker that generations of children have grown up falling asleep to watching every Christmas season. For one thing, Shankman started his career in showbiz as a dancer, then became a choreographer before directing high-profile movie musicals like Hairspray and next year’s highly anticipated Rock of Ages. Plus, he’s been a regular presence as a judge on Fox’s summer...

“The Nutcracker” is a traditional holiday movie that Hollywood loves to remake again and again. New Line Cinema will take a crack with another take on the classic holiday film set for 2013. According to Deadline, the studio signed director Adam Shankman to helm the project off the script written by Darren Lemke. Lemke recently wrote the upcoming fantasy film “Jack the Giant Killer.” In this version of “The Nutcracker,” the story will be close to the 1815 novel by E.T.A. Hoffman. It is about a young girl and who is lead by a nutcracker that comes alive to lead her on a wondrous adventure. Mike Fleming of Deadline described the story similar in tone to “Alice in Wonderland.” Shankman is wrapping the production of the upcoming musical adaptation of “Rock of Ages” for next year’s release. He is also known for “Hairspray,” “Cheaper by the Dozen 2,” “The Pacifier,” and...

The world as a whole is still trying to forget the unbelievably insane The Nutcracker in 3D, released last year. (And just out on DVD as The Nutcracker: The Untold Story.) The easiest way to forget that the film exists is to make another movie called The Nutcracker, and have this one be a truly family-friendly version. And so we've got this: Adam Shankman (Hairspray, Rock of Ages) will make The Nutcracker for New Line, with this version being "a new take on the classic fairy tale that is being eyed as a tent pole family holiday film for late 2013." Deadline [1] reports that the script is by Darren Lemke (Lost, Jack the Giant Killer, Shrek Forever After) and that his script uses the 1815 story by E.T.A Hoffman, The Nutcracker and the Rat King, as the primary source. That was the inspiration for the libretto for the famous Tchaikovsky ballet,...

As of right now, the best deal is Pulp Fiction on Blu-ray for $3.99, but few prices have been revealed and Amazon has already promised in the coming days deals for the The Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy (Blu-ray), Jurassic Park Trilogy (Blu-ray), Bridesmaids, The King's Speech and X-Men: First Class will be announced. And on Thursday, November 24, titles such as The Social Network, The Lion King, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and more will be announced,...

★☆☆☆☆ Filling the traditional cinematic turkey position in this year's lineup of Christmas-themed releases, The Nutcracker in 3D (2010) is a hauntingly amateurish experiment in trashing the beloved original ballet by subjecting a superb cast to an embarrassing amalgamation of sloppy direction and bland, undeveloped CGI. The essential magic of the story is swapped with a strangely perverse, revised tale that resembles an over-budgeted pantomime more than a child-friendly adventure.

Chicago – The mind boggles when attempting to comprehend the unmitigated disaster known as “The Nutcracker: The Untold Story,” which was titled “The Nutcracker in 3D” during its theatrical run. Other bad films have tried to adapt Tchaikovsky’s ballet classic for the big screen (remember Macaulay Culkin’s version from the ’90s?), but none have sunk to the depths of appalling ineptitude inhabited by this Christmas turkey.
Far from his glory days of “Uncle Vanya,” Russian filmmaker Andrey Konchalovskiy has made a film so deplorable that it’s guaranteed to traumatize children while offending their parents. His take on the material is so dark, twisted and thoroughly unwatchable that it inspires guffaws of incredulity. Yet don’t be fooled into thinking that this film is a guilty pleasure. It quickly exits “so-bad-it’s-funny” territory after its opening moments, before emerging as a self-important, staggeringly wrongheaded meditation on Nazism.

Has the world learned nothing from the most recent attempt to shove the story of The Nutcracker on to our screens? You might recall – or most likely have buried the painful memories of – critical and commercial misfire The Nutcracker in 3D. Universal will certainly be hoping we all have, as the studio is nabbed a pitch for a new, live-action adaptation.Rise of the Planet of the Apes producing team Peter Chernin and Dylan Clarke are spearheading the new version, which will come from the keyboards of John Mann and Jon Gunn, who have together written Boo U for DreamWorks and a film based around the Magic 8 Ball toy for Paramount. They’ll spin what the executives now hope will be a fresh look at the familiar story of the 12-year-old girl who, along with her older brother and sister, is given a Nutcracker doll by her inventor/clockmaker grandfather.

Voting members of The Golden Raspberry Award Foundation have sifted through the cinematic rubble of last year's Berry Worst Achievements in Film, and come up with the "winners" for The 31st Annual Razzie Awards. Results are announced in satirical ceremonies held at Hollywood's Barnsdall Gallery Theatre at 7:30pm Pst on Saturday, February 26, 2011 - the now traditional Night Before the Oscars.
Not quite sweeping the ceremony, but still handily leading the pack among this year's Razzie choices is Razzie Repeat Offender M. Night Shyamalan's "re-imagining" of the faux-anime' TV series The Last Airbender into a jumbled, jump-cut mess of a movie that fans of the TV show hated even more than critics did (if that's even possible!). In addition to Worst Director and Worst Picture, The Last Airbender also "won" Worst Screenplay, a brand-new Razzie category for 2010, Worst Eye-Gouging Mis-Use of 3-D, and Worst Supporting Actor Jackson Rathbone (who...

Well, at least they were (relatively) kind to "Twilight."
Despite nominations for several Golden Raspberry Awards, "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse" managed to emerge from this year's Razzies unscathed, except for a Worst Supporting Actor win for Jackson Rathbone (poor Jasper).
However, Rathbone's "win" wasn't just for his performance in "Eclipse" -- it was also for his performance in "The Last Airbender," the poor, sad cinematic creature that also took home Razzies for Worst Picture, Worst Director, Worst Screenplay and Worst Eye-Gouging Use of 3-D (yikes!).
Hey, at least it didn't get Worst Prequel, Remake, Ripoff or Sequel -- that honor went to "Sex and the City 2," which also won Worst Actress (for all four of its leading ladies) and Worst Screen Couple/Ensemble (for the entire cast).
Anyway, thank goodness that's all over with. The 2011 Razzie Awards took place on Saturday, Feb. 26 -- the complete list of nominees are listed below,...
