Successful writer and scholar Jonathan Merrick falls under the spell of the irresistible, bewitchingly beautiful Ligeia. She's fighting a fatal illness and she will stop at nothing to defeat death, her one true enemy. She steals other people's souls and on her quest to immortality she tricks Jonathan into supporting her work, breaking him apart from his fiancé Rowena and pulling him into her dark, mysterious world. They settle down in an old manor by the Black Sea where Ligeia's everlasting presence slowly drives Jonathan to madness... Written by Michael Staininger
After all this movie wasn't that bad. It do has a few weaker moments but the story was okay for such kind of flicks. There's not that much to discover if you are a horror geek but the fast editing made it watchable.
The moments I didn't like were the, sigh, CGI moments used to catch the spirits of the death especially when you see faces being catched in tubes. But what i didn't like was again the performance of Eric Roberts. Here he speaks Russian and if he has to speak English it's done with an Eastern European accent but it just didn't work out. Also, there are a few love scene's involved throughout Ligeia but here I did want to repeat what I have said in so many flicks. If you have a love scene how is it possible that the girl is laying with her bra on in bed while being shagged. Face it, in the beginning of this flick we do see Rowena (Kaitlin Doubleday) laying in bed very sexy but once she's being taken by Jonathan (Wes Bently) she still has her bra on, what a turn off for the guy having sex with her. And there are a few scene's were we do have that situation.
Still, it's a bit low on the red stuff but being based on a Poe story it's normal that this have to give the goosebumps by creepy moments. It succeeded in some parts. It's the atmosphere that creates this flick. It isn't going to be a classic or I even won't really call it a Gothic story, therefor the CGI stood in the way.
Ideal for a starter for a horror evening
