Among its seven Golden Globe nominations were mentions for all its principal cast members (a most unusual occurrence) with the sole exceptions of Justin Kirk and Emma Thompson. The reason for Kirk's omission was that he was originally put forward for a Supporting Actor nomination, until it was realized that he actually has more screen time than most of his co-stars. However, by switching to the Best Actor category, he was effectively canceled out as he lost the votes he had previously amassed in the supporting category.
At the beginning of the play and this miniseries, Roy Cohn ( Al Pacino) praises the Boadway musical "La Cage aux Folles." The musical was based on a 1973 French play, a play that was later adapted into La Cage aux Folles (1978) and then remade as The Birdcage (1996). The latter film was also directed by (Mike Nichols) (who co-executive produced and directed this miniseries) and starred (Nathan Lane), who would later go onto play Roy Cohn in a National Theatre production of Angels in America: Part I - Millennium Approaches (2017) and Angels in America: Part 2 - Perestroika.
In the scene in the bar with Joe Pitt and Roy Cohn, the piano in the background is playing a slow-tempo jazz version of the Angels in America main theme.
