Zero expectations, pleasantly surprised!!

We had no idea what to expect when watching this! We were expecting to be disappointed and left wanting. We were so wrong! Just when we thought it was wrapping up, another piece unfolded! Thought it was a great, detailed episode. No stone was left unturned! Very touching, great investigative work. Hoping more episodes come out soon!

If only more true crime documentaries ended this way...

Warning: Spoilers
I watch far too many true crime documentaries about unsolved/cold cases, and whilst the stories they tell are routinely gripping, it's mostly the case that I end up feeling a pang of dissatisfaction because there is no clear resolution - the family of the victim is still left searching for answers, the perpetrator is not identified with any meaningful degree of certainty.

***SPOILER ALERT***

Whilst the perpetrator of the murder in this case had not (yet) been brought to justice at the time of filming, the 99% sibling match from a comparison of DNA in a sample of clothes discarded at the crime scene (almost certainly from the perpetrator given the proximity to the body and that the dump site was in the middle of nowhere) versus a sample offered by the sister of the main suspect (the victim's husband) leaves one feeling confident that they 'found their man' and that justice will ultimately prevail.

More importantly, the investigation brought answers to immediate family members of the victim, reunited people who were not even aware who their close relatives were, and meant the remains of 'Jane Doe' (Kathy Thomas) finally had a name and could be laid to rest after being discarded like trash decades before and sitting in a storage box ever since. The focus on the family of the victim, and their journey towards closure after the initial shock of discovering their mother/sister had been the victim of such a heinous crime and many years of emotional trauma from not knowing why she disappeared or where she disappeared to makes this documentary stand out from many others out there.

The blurb (referring to "work on different unknown victim cases") suggests there will be more episodes to come, and I for one, cannot wait to see them.

90 minute dateline episode is far too long
Xavier_Stone22 January 2021
First of all, these types of shows rarely provide the amount of drama needed to sustain a person's attention for the full hour on television, and commercials break it up somewhat. To have a story for a hour and a half nonstop being shown as a movie is not going to work out well. After 20 minutes it started dragging and I ended up skipping ahead, watching a bit and skipping until I got to the end.

There just isn't enough surprises or information in this show to make it this long. It's called editing. The viewer doesn't need to hear about every little story from 20 years ago that brings nothing to the case, and is just filler. This could have been done in 30 minutes or the 45 mins and was perfect for an hour on tv.

Unless there is something extremely satisfying or amazing at the end detective shows like this shouldn't be made this long.

Absolutely thought this was a brilliant show. Very moving. And the science and methods used to solve this was fascinating! I love the focus on family and the need to reunite families. Absolutely lovely show.
