Storyline

Sam discovers that demons don't work on Halloween. Unfortunately, the depressed Devil decides to make Sam's assignment even harder to cheer himself up. Sam and Sock capture one soul, that of Leon Czolgosz, an escapee who assassinated President William McKinley back in 1901. But before Sam can return him, Leon tries to convince them that he's changed. The Devil then sends Sam to recapture a second soul, a serial killer who plans on starting a new murder spree. Sam has to work even harder while even the denizens of hell enjoy some time off.

In this episode of Reaper, Sam (Bret Harrison) has more than one problem. He catches a soul, Leon (Patton Oswalt), but then is unable to send it back to hell because, well, it's Halloween and demons don't work during Halloween. This annoys the devil (Ray Wise) and he takes things out on Sam by making him also hunt down another soul. Meanwhile, Sock (Tyler Labine) is enjoying the company of Leon, who is now contained in a snowglobe. And Sam is also stressed by the fact that Andi (Missy Peregrym) isn't really acting like his friend any more.

This episode packs plenty in and is all the better for it. Leon is a soul trying to convince the gang that he has seen the error of his ways and is trying to be a better person. It actually makes for one or two interesting moments as viewers are reminded of the situation that Sam is in. Even if he took pity on someone, he'd still have to send them to hell.

Harrison and Labine work as well as ever together, Rick Gonzalez and Donavon Stinson have their moments, Ray Wise is great and Missy Peregrym is as sweet as ever. And Patton Oswalt is absolutely brilliant.

Director Victoria Hochberg, working from the script by Craig DiGregorio, does a great job with an episode that stands up as a highlight of the first season.
