Izzy wizzy, Sam's kept busy.
8 January 2013 | by (Edinburgh.) – See all my reviews

The latest escapee from Hell is a magician with a grudge in this episode of the show about a young man (Sam, played by Bret Harrison) who is forced into working for the devil (Ray Wise). How does Sam become aware of this escapee? Well, the clue for him this time is that everything keeps disappearing. His car keys, his wallet, his beer, it's another frustrating experience for him.

Kevin Murphy takes on the writing duties this time, and Ron Underwood is the director, for yet another enjoyable outing for Sam, 'Sock' (Tyler Labine), Ben (Rick Gonzalez) and the lovely Andi (Missy Peregrym). Oh, and Ted (Donavon Stinson), their manager who continually fails to get them to take any pride in their work.

The cast are all on their usual good form and this episode gives a few more funny moments to Rick Gonzalez, which is good to see as his character sometimes felt like a third wheel in the past few episodes. Ray Wise once again has many of the best moments. I just love the fact that the show makes the devil such a fun, charming figure while also never losing sight of the fact that he's, well, the devil.

There may be a slight move away from the quick-fire barrage of gags that weaved through the preceding episodes but that's no bad thing. The show has found its rhythm and is making room for each character to breathe and grow, which is no bad thing. No bad thing at all.
