Marcus Aquila is a young Roman officer who has taken command of a remote outpost in Britannia. He specifically asked for the assignment as his father was killed somewhere north of Hadrian's wall some 20 years before. The Ninth Legion' was also lost. When Marcus is seriously wounded in a battle with locals, he is invalided out of the army. Unable to make his mark as a soldier, he sets off with his slave Esca.
