The Mighty Macs

It's a shame that The Mighty Macs didn't get a better distribution deal than it did, because it's a lot better than its dumping into direct-to-dvd purgatory would suggest. Its every narrative beat is telegraphed within the opening minutes, but acted out with conviction and elevated by a strong turn by Carla Gugino. What's most likely is that it was pigeonholed by distributors as a religious film, which is true and it isn't: while Macs doesn't make any excuses or apologies for its embracing of the institution of Catholic schools, it never lapses into mere proselytizing or reverence, but is rather energetic in its love of basketball.

My Favorite Movie: David Boreanaz

"If I had to pick one, 'Singin' in the Rain' is probably one of the best films ever made. Donald O'Connor's performance in that is just, I love him. I think he was great….

Even 'The Wizard of Oz,' I'm a sucker for... 'The Shining.' 'Goodfellas.' I mean, I love anything Martin Scorsese did… 'Everybody's Fine' [with] Marcello Mastroianni… Short films [like] 'La Jetée,' great film, experimental.

Former film student David Borneanaz can currently be seen as FBI ref Ed Rush in "The Mighty Macs" with Carla Gugino.

My Favorite Movie: Carla Gugino

"If I pick one, I gotta go with 'All That Jazz.' If I have to only pick one, which is very difficult, but I would say 'All That Jazz.'

"I love everything about that movie. Jessica Lange as the Angel of Death is so amazing. [Director Bob Fosse] is extraordinary. The idea that Bob Fosse directed that movie while he was dying and made a movie about himself and was portrayed in such a powerful way, I don't even know how it happened. I don't even understand how you could have that kind of objectivity.

"It blows me away, that movie. It really does. Every time I see it, I'm like, I don't understand, because it's such an atypical music, and yet it has every element of a musical. He was so iconic. Yeah, so I just love many things about that movie."

[Review] The Mighty Macs

  • The Film Stage
If you are keeping count there have been four films concerning faith released just in the last month or so – The Mighty Macs (made in 2007) counters the paternal-centered notions of the more recently made Courageous and Footloose. The other faith-based film of late, Vera Farmiga’s Higher Ground is a completely different beast altogether. Beginning on a note of great optimism, the 1971-set Macs follows Cathy Rush, a Baptist hired to coach basketball at a small all-girls Pennsylvania Catholic college, but does not follow in the footsteps expected of her.

Arriving at Immaculata College (later it would go co-ed and grow to be Immaculata University) – Rush (Carla Gugino) is provided with little resources, fighting for a makeshift practice space in the basement of the church. In a heartbreaking scene she asks for more and is led into the dormitory of Mother St. John (Ellen Burstyn) – who welcomes her to take

Zachary Quinto's Movie Career Is Just Fine, Thank You Very Much

Zachary Quinto's Movie Career Is Just Fine, Thank You Very Much
One week after he came out as a gay man, Zachary Quinto came out again—in movie theaters, as the actor himself put it in a tweet. And if the question was (and it always is) would the career survive, then the answer from the multiplex was yes. Sorry, Hugh Jackman, Orlando Bloom and David Boreanaz. Yes, in its opening weekend, Quinto's Margin Call, a low-budget ensemble drama about the plundering of Wall Street, out-earned, theater for theater, Jackman's Real Steel, Bloom's Three Musketeers, Boreanaz's The Mighty Macs, and all but three other films, Box Office Mojo stats showed. Playing at 56 locations, Margin Call grossed $582,000, for a flush $10,393 per-screen...

Moviegoers were feeling the Halloween "spirit" over the weekend. "Paranormal Activity 3" broke the box-office record for the biggest fall opening with an estimated $54 million debut, passing "Jackass 3D" to become the highest-grossing September/October opening ever. Meanwhile, "The Three Musketeers," "Johnny English Reborn" and "The Mighty Macs" all underperformed.

Both "Real Steel" and the remake of "Footloose" held strong over the weekend. Hugh Jackman's robot action adventure was #2 with $11.3 million for a $67.2 million total, with "Footloose" right behind at #3 with $10.9 million for a $30.9 million total.

Roughly 55 percent of "The Three Musketeers" $8.8 million debut, which landed the film at #4 at the box office, can be attributed to its more expensive 3-D screening ticket prices.

'Paranormal Activity 3' Possesses Fall Record

'Paranormal Activity 3' Possesses Fall Record
Paranormal Activity 3 proved there's definitely still a lot of life left in the franchise by opening to an estimated $54 million this weekend. Besides marking a significant improvement over Paranormal Activity 2's $40.7 million, it also topped last year's Jackass 3-D to claim a new record for highest Fall opening ever (September and October). Unfortunately, The Three Musketeers, Johnny English Reborn and The Mighty Macs all missed modest targets, and as a result the weekend fell a bit short of the same frame last year. Aside from setting the Fall record, Paranormal Activity 3 also bested its predecessor to take the top opening ever for a pure horror movie. For a slightly less impressive metric, the horror three-quel's earnings were incredibly front-loaded: its Friday box office represented 48.6 percent of its opening weekend gross, which ranks ninth all-time. It was a slight improvement over Paranormal Activity 2's 49.4 percent, at least.

Box office report: 'Paranormal Activity 3' scores best October opening ever with $54 mil

Box office report: 'Paranormal Activity 3' scores best October opening ever with $54 mil
Well, that worked. Produced for only $5 million, Paramount’s Paranormal Activity 3 surpassed everyone’s expectations and opened to a staggering $54 million, according to studio estimates.

That’s the biggest October debut ever, beating the $50.4 million opening of last year’s equally scary Jackass 3-D. Paramount is also claiming that PA3 clinched the best horror opening ever, topping Paranormal Activity 2′s $40.7 million. But that record depends on how strictly one defines the horror genre. For instance, is I Am Legend more of a sci-fi or horror film? If you consider it to be the latter, then I Am Legend

The Three Musketeers, Johnny English Reborn Bomb: Box Office

Julianne Hough, Footloose Paranormal Activity 3 to Gross $10 Million Above Estimates?: Box Office On Friday (Oct. 21), Craig Brewer's Footloose was ahead of last weekend's top film, Shawn Levy's Real Steel, collecting $3.47 million in second place according to studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo. Real Steel, which stars stars Hugh Jackman, Dakota Goyo, and Evangeline Lilly, took in $3.1 million at no. 3. Footloose features Kenny Wormald, Julianne Hough, Dennis Quaid, and Andie McDowell. Aside from Paranormal Activity 3, the weekend's new wide releases turned out to be a series of implosive bombs. Distributed by Summit Entertainment — which hasn't had much luck outside the Twilight Saga franchise — Paul W. S. Anderson's 3D version of The Three Musketeers opened with $2.9m in fourth place, and is expected to take in a mere $8-9m by Sunday evening. Initial guesstimates placed the film's weekend take in the low teens. One of its leads,

Paranormal Activity 3 to Top Box Office

After trailing behind Real Steel on the weekend and on Monday, Footloose topped the North American box-office chart for three days in a row. Its box-office rule, however, is already over, as Paranormal Activity 3 opened with an estimated $8 million at Thursday midnight screenings at 2,200 locations, according to Box Office Mojo. [Photo: Kenny Wormald, Julianne Hough in Footloose.] As Bom's Ray Subers remarks, that's considerably better than Paranormal Activity 2's $6.3m at 1,800 sites last year. Paranormal Activity 2 went on to gross $84.75 million in the Us/Canada and $177.51 million worldwide. The original Paranormal Activity collected $193.35 million worldwide. Including Thursday midnight's box-office take, Paranormal Activity 3 is expected to take in approximately $40 million this weekend — that would be more than any other movie at the North American box office since Rise of the Planet of the Apes on the first weekend of August. That is also proof that, as pundits everywhere affirm, audiences want original, quality movies and storylines.

Box Office Forecast: Paranormal Activity 3 faces little competition

We have a decent line-up today with four new flicks coming out starting with the biggest of the bunch and ironically, the cheapest, Paranormal Activity 3. Yep, the series that started so small is now a trilogy and number 4 is definitely on the horizon. Johnny English Reborn, The Three Musketeers and The Mighty Macs [...]

"Paranormal Activity 3" Reviews

  • TooFab
This week at the movies, we've got a vengeful spirit ( "Paranormal Activity 3," starring Katie Featherston and Sprague Grayden ), a trio of swashbucklers ( "The Three Musketeers," starring Logan Lerman and Milla Jovovich ), a silly spy ( "Johnny English Reborn," starring Rowan Atkinson and Gillian Anderson ), and some holy hoopsters ( "The Mighty Macs," starring Carla Gugino and David Boreanaz ). What do the critics have to say? "Paranormal Activity 3" 94% ( Showtimes and tickets ) You probably know what to expect with the "Paranormal Activity" franchise at this point, but that doesn't mean that part three doesn't have a few tricks up its sleeve: critics say this installment is as spooky and shriek-inducing as the first one -- perhaps even more so -- and has a healthy dose of humor. This time out, we discover the origins of Katie's mysterious bedeviling, revealed through some serendipitously recorded VHS tapes. The pundits say the series' conceit may not be fresh,

Q&A: The 'Mighty' Fine Carla Gugino and David Boreanaz

In "The Mighty Macs," Carla Gugino stars as Cathy Rush, a tough-talking basketball coach who rouses a bunch of misfit Catholic school girls to victory. David Boreanaz plays her husband Ed, an FBI ref and wearer of awesome '70s outfits who is occasionally frustrated -- but ultimately supportive -- of his wife's dedication to her job, in a time back before it was cool for ladies to work after they got married.

In real life, they're a friendly pair of folks eager to talk about the issues "The Mighty Macs" raises, and, of course, joke around about us still-rabid "Buffy" fans.

I keep reading this film being described as "'Hoosiers' meets 'Sister Act.'" What are your favorite sports movies?

David Boreanaz: Being from Philadelphia, I always gravitated towards "Rocky." For me, it was pretty big. And then I have to say "The Fighter"... I'm a really big fan of that film,

The Mighty Macs Movie Review

The Mighty Macs Movie Review
Title: The Mighty Macs Director: Tim Chambers Starring: Carla Gugino, Ellen Burstyn, Marley Shelton, David Boreanaz, Katie Hayak There is a very simple game plan when depicting a sports-drama and very few films will deviate from that said game plan. And the same goes for The Mighty Macs; a true story that gives a glimpse into the meteoric rise of basketball Hall-of-Famer Cathy Rush. Cathy Rush (Carla Gugino) spent most of her days being the prototypical housewife in her marriage to NBA referee Ed Rush (David Boreanaz). Wanting to break away from the monotony of daily chores, she applies for the head coaching gig at Immaculata – an all catholic...

Forecast: 'Paranormal' Set to Deliver More Scares

Friday A.M. Update: Paranormal Activity 3 earned an estimated $8 million from midnight screenings at 2,200 locations last night. That's a marked improvement over Paranormal Activity 2, which earned $6.3 million from 1,800 theaters at midnight.Forecast: After a few quiet weeks, Paranormal Activity 3 looks to provide the jolt needed to bring the box office back to life. At the very least, the horror three-quel shouldn't have any trouble hitting the top spot against mild competition from The Three Musketeers, Johnny English Reborn and The Mighty Macs. Paranormal Activity 3 is set to haunt around 4,500 screens at 3,321 locations, while The Three Musketeers battles on roughly 3,800 screens at 3,017 locations (a 3D theater count is not currently available). Johnny English Reborn and The Mighty Macs have much lighter releases, hitting 1,551 and 975 mostly single-screen locations, respectively.Coming off the enormous success of the first Paranormal Activity ($107.9 million), Paranormal Activity 2 debuted to a huge $40.7 million

The Mighty Macs Finally Reaches Theatres Today

I've been following the film The Mighty Macs for a number of years. It's been one of those films that has been on the brink on release for what seems is a really long time. I was very excited to be able to include it this past February at the inaugural Athena Film Festival. I love a feel good women's sports story. There are so few good ones. Ones that inspire and dare you to dream bigger than you ever imagined. This film follows in the line of A League of Their Own and Bend it Like Beckham but it…
