Screen and scream again.
29 November 2010 | by (Edinburgh.) – See all my reviews

It's no surprise that I watched Don't Look Up and kept thinking of many other, superior films such as Ringu and Coming Soon because it's yet another remake of an Asian horror movie (the original actually directed by Hideo Nakata, who also wrote the story for it as well).

Fruit Chan directs with a complete lack of original style or talent as we wade through a dull tale of a young man (Reshad Strik) who becomes obsessed with finishing an old movie that was apparently cursed. It's not long before bad things start happening on the set and the irate producer (Henry Thomas) is the least of anyone's worries.

There are one or two fun moments in this film, it's not without low-level enjoyment here and there, but for the most part things are tired and uninteresting. What we get is a mixture of imagery we've seen done elsewhere, and done better, and an overuse of CGI throughout when we could have had some spookiness and a build up to a tense, nasty finale. As it stands, the last 10-15 minutes are quite laughable with absurdity piled upon absurdity.

The acting is pretty bad as well - Henry Thomas is the best on display here while the rest range from the bearable to the dire. A cameo from Eli Roth is surely something the man will expunge from his CV ASAP. The lead characters? Dull, cliché-ridden and generally irritating so not really the best people to hang out with for 90 minutes.

I have no idea how good or bad the original movie is but, regardless of that, this movie is pretty terrible in it's own right and not really worth seeking out. Best avoided.
