The episode is named after a song by The Who.
Annette is reading "The Historian" by Elizabeth Kostova, a novel that riffs on the story of Dracula.
When Sam is trying to find out about Mary's friends, he asks about a Robert Camble who died on the 19th of July 2001. July 19th is Jared Padalecki's birthday.
This episode is similar in name to an episode of Dark Angel (2000) in which Jensen Ackles also was a recurring character. Also the name of Dean's "son" in this episode is the name of the character Jensen Ackles played in season 1 of Dark Angel.
The reflections of the changelings in this story appear to be heavily inspired by a creature from a Star Trek (original series) episode called "The Man Trap" (season 1, episode 1). The big difference, the creature in Star Trek fed on salt whereas the changelings in this episode fed on other bodily fluids.
Deans says, "Gumby girl. Does that make me Pokey?" He is referring to the title character and his trusty sidekick from the 1950's/1960's TV claymation show "Gumby."

When Sam reminds Ruby that Yellow-eyes is gone, she says, "Oh yeah, yeah, yeah. That's right. Ding dong the demon's dead." She is referring to The Wizard of Oz (1939).
