I have the feeling somebody on the creative staff has left "My Name is Earl" for greener pastures. I don't know how else to explain the loss of heart and bad turn this once terrific show has taken in season three. One of the most brilliant episodes in the entire series was "Our Cops is On!". It was funny, it was tight, it was a great idea. So in a season that seems bankrupt of good ideas, they went back to the "Cops" idea, rehashing a lot of jokes from the earlier episode and stretching it out to an hour that I can only describe as a big mess. The original was inspired. This episode seems desperate.
The story such as it is, has the Hickeys stealing fireworks and Homeland security equipment from the summer fair. They also steal a car (just like the first time)while Kenny moons over the cop he secretly loves (just like the last time), Tim Stack is drunk driving (just like the last time), and Joy is secretly having her affair with Darnell, while Catalina gets into a fight with another stripper at Chubbys. It's mostly a series of gags, with few of them hitting.
I can only hope somebody over there gets Earl out of prison and back on to checking off people on the list. That's where the show had its heart and soul. That's where they need to get back to if they hope to see season four.
