Something's missing to make a difference here

Warning: Spoilers
"Crossbow" is an Australian 14-minute short film from 2007, so this one has its 10th anniversary this year. It was written and directed by David Michôd at an earlier point in his career a while before he made "Animal Kingdom", still his by far most known work. And just like in that one, he is also part of the cast here. The most famous cast member, however, is recent Golden Globe nominee Joel Edgerton. This is a story about love (or lack thereof), family relationships and ultimately violence and death. In my opinion, the film escalated a bit too quickly and that hurts the realistic gritty story-telling approach that Michôd is known to give his films usually. Performances were decent without ever standing out. The build-up could have been a bit better. Voice-over narration was a bit too much perhaps. Overall, I would say it was not really a memorable watch by any means and I'd only recommend it to the biggest fans of Edgerton/Michôd Everybody else can skip it and they will not be missing much. I give it a thumbs-down.
