An unpalatable witches brew
raeames13 July 2020
It seems often the case that even normally sober police procedural series like to throw in one or two episodes with a hint of the supernatural.

They've certainly not done it by halves here. In fact they've thrown in everything but the kitchen sink, or maybe that should be cauldron. We've got hypnotism, hypnotherapy, Tarot cards, magic as entertainment and escapology, magic as witchcraft. witchcraft as Wicca, satanism and the "left hand path", magic rituals, sex magic, murder as human sacrifice, sigils, pentacles and pentagrams aplenty.

Striving to preside magisterially over this farrago of gothic horror is guest star Richard E Grant as Lee Knight. A nice turn also by Nancy Carroll playing Samantha Mantell; an amusing contrast to the role we are more familiar with her in, as Lady Felicia in the holy and rather twee Father Brown.

There's not so much scope for our usual heroes Dalziel and Pascoe to show their personalities and irreverent wit. This episode suffers as a result and because it seems to take itself too seriously. If I thought it was genuine parody I could have been more understanding.

The show has lost its magic
xmasdaybaby196616 August 2021
Nancy Carroll and Robyn Addison bring some class to what has to be the worst ever story in the show.

Similar occult shows have happened in rival show Midsomer Murders but this is the first time in 56 stories that this originally northern gritty drama has stopped so low and also the first time they have shown a topless woman.

These things usually when a show is out of ideas so it is probably no shock that this was the start of what would ultimately be the final series.

Even the new pathologist has an earring and no mention as to where regular pathologists Ashurst and Mason are.

Stop before this episode!

I can handle a lot. I gave this episode 38 minutes. It was utterly gruesome and so out of character for this great show. I read numerous reviews about people's disappointment in season 12. So far they are correct. This episode is filled with blood, satanic rituals and unnecessary gore.

Rubbish

Pure and simple - rubbish which doesn't even deserve my score of 1! Had to keep watching it to see if it could possibly get any worse, and it did. A total embarrassment.

Nonsense
wbacd12 June 2023
I have always admired the series Dalziel & Pascoe, except this episode!

This was the biggest load of nonsense I have ever seen!

Obviously the producers wanted another episode, but had absolutely no idea what story to come up with!

TOTAL RUBBISH !!!

A hundred years ago maybe people would have swollowed this, but these days, nobody still falls for that nonsense.

I love a little fantasie, but this transcended everything!

Hard to believe that there are people that rewarded this bantling with more than on star.

This was over two hours of my life wasted.

I wanted to swtch it off a few times, but on the other hand I also wanted to know the end.

I should have sticked to my original plan and switched it off after the first half hour!
