The Wayne Train (1973 TV Short) User Reviews

This four-minute live-action short is essentially an alternate trailer . . .

. . . to the 3:33-long theatrical movie preview Warner Bros. ran for its 1973 John Wayne vehicle, THE TRAIN ROBBERS. Director Burt Kennedy is seen briefly here, and the uncredited narrator intones that Wayne and his train-robbing cohorts are fighting a rival gang of "40" gunmen (about double the actual number of inept shooters slaughtered by "The Duke's" crew in this feature film). This puff piece claims the flick in question includes an "explosive relationship" between the characters played by Wayne and Ann-Margret, but again this deviates from what a viewer sees on-screen (which is more like the pairing of an Old Folks Home patient and the caregiver-of-the-day). One thing that the booming narrator FAILS to mention is that this mostly geriatric bunch of "TRAIN ROBBERS" only pick on a TOTALLY STATIONARY (i.e., derailed) steam engine. If such a scenario does not sound like your idea of excitement, find a kid and play with Thomas the Tank Engine, instead.

Last of the Making Ofs...

This had to be one of the very last of its kind: a short documentary on the making of the film made as kind of a publicity tool. However, the film seems tired and aware its a dying breed and does virtually nothing to make me want to see this film.

I remember they used to do these all the time with films in the 1950's and 1960's--the pre-"Entertainment Tonight" era where now TV does their publicity for them.

This takes us to the little town in Mexico where the movie was filmed, tells a couple of tales while using little if any BTS footage--just clips from the movie for the most part.

It's definitely a relic of the past that probably knew it was a dying breed even back then.
