Michael Parks, Beloved Character Actor and Quentin Tarantino and Kevin Smith Regular, Passes Away at 77

10 May 2017 9:09 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Michael Parks, longtime Hollywood mainstay and beloved character actor and singer, has passed away at the age of 77. The news was announced by filmmaker Kevin Smith, who took to his Instagram to share that “the best actor I’ve ever known” and his “cinematic muse,” had died. No cause of death was named.

Smith directed Parks in both his “Tusk” and “Red State,” having relished the longtime actor’s career since first seeing him in Robert Rodriguez’s “From Dusk Till Dawn.” Though Parks’ career stretched back to 1960, when he made his screen debut on TV’s “Zane Grey Theater,” in recent years, the supporting standout had enjoyed a revival at the hands of both Quentin Tarantino (who Smith deemed Parks’ “biggest fan”) and Smith, who continued to craft roles for the singular actor.

The 25 greatest movies about making movies

3 May 2017 2:40 AM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Mark Harrison May 19, 2017

From the currently playing Their Finest to the likes of Bowfinger and Boogie Nights, we salute the movies about making movies...

If you haven't caught up yet, Their Finest is currently playing in UK cinemas and it's a gorgeous little love letter to perseverance through storytelling, set against the backdrop of a film production office at the British Ministry of Information during the Second World War. Based on Lissa Evans' novel, Gemma Arterton and Bill Nighy play characters whose access to the film industry has been contingent on the global crisis that takes other young men away from such trifling matters, and it's a real joy to watch.

Among other things, the film got us thinking about other films about making films. We're not talking about documentaries, even though Hearts Of Darkness, the documentary about the making of Apocalypse Now, may be the greatest film about »

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice gets a buddy cop-inspired fan-made trailer

The wacky Internet is utilizing its creativity again, this time with a fan-made trailer from Chief Brody Rules for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice that envisions the blockbuster as a buddy cop action comedy in the same vein as classics such as Lethal Weapon.

Throughout the course of the three-minute trailer are footage and sound clips from many other films (some from the Dceu and some not), along with a lighthearted soundtrack that certainly switches up the tone from what Zack Snyder delivered with the DC blockbuster. Check out the silliness below…

Why 2007 was a great year for film

17 April 2017 1:27 PM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Mark Allison Apr 18, 2017

10 years ago was was a high watermark in Hollywood - and British - filmmaking. We've been looking at why...

Ten years on, and 2007 must surely be remembered as one of the finest years in English-language film-making, quite possibly the best of this century so far. Like 1939, 1976, or 1994, it was one of those years in which a succession of veritable classics came into being. So many, in fact, that some of the best examples were cruelly overlooked by the hype machine of the day. A decade later, it’s high time to look back at 2007 for both its celebrated landmarks and forgotten masterpieces.

Led Zeppelin Is Hollywood’s New Secret Weapon

12 April 2017 9:58 AM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Rock’s most flamboyant band is setting the stage for a summer of movies.

If you’re me, the first thing you thought of when you saw the Thor: Ragnarok trailer was King Arthur: Legend of the Sword. No, not because both movies feature a dethroned ruler who is trying to defend his kingdom from an evil sorcerer, or because both feature bombastic feats of slow-motion swordplay, or even because each movie adheres to a sort of punk-medieval aesthetic with splashes of color (well, Ok, now I’m thinking of those things). No, I thought of King Arthur: Legend of the Sword because that was the other trailer in only a month’s span to pull out all the stops and feature an iconic song by Led Zeppelin, arguably the greatest band that ever lived. They’re big, they’re bold, and they’re Hollywood’s new secret weapon when it comes to blockbuster titles.

What Ben Affleck Needs to Do to Save The Batman

8 April 2017 10:12 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Studios don't generally like it when a big budget, tentpole film that they are putting a lot of money behind has some speed bumps. Generally, they like things to run as smoothly as possible so that positive word of mouth remains positive. The last thing they want is to craft this perfect little bow of film, only to have the bow unravel during production, or worse, before the release.

So it probably gave Warner Bros. and DC Films a fair amount of stomach pains when Ben Affleck, very publicly, stepped out of the director's chair on The Batman. The reason he gave was that he didn't feel he could do both jobs. This makes sense as playing a superhero in a movie one is directing, is probably much harder than playing the Tony Mendez character in Argo.

However, Hollywood, and more specifically, the media, can't just accept Affleck's reasoning. »
