This episode contains a couple of spoofs on Hollywood celebrities: Gina Lollolasagna is a play on Italian actress Gina Lollobrigida (1927- ) and Sedda Parsnips is a joking reference to and a clever conflation of the names of feuding gossip columnists Hedda Hopper (1885-1966) and Louella Parsons (1881-1972).
The trivia item below may give away important plot points.
After the movie bombs, Maynard suggests they should have made the movie in Smell-O-Vision, which Dobie and his father put down as "wacky". In fact, there was a system called Smell-O-Vision that released odor during the projection of a film so that the viewer could "smell" what was happening in the movie. The technique was created by Hans Laube and made its only appearance in the film Scent of Mystery (1960) . The process injected 30 odors into a movie theater's seats when triggered by the film's soundtrack.
