DRINKIN' AND GAMBLIN' THE NIGHT AWAY!
tcchelsey22 February 2024
We get to see Herb's wealthy brother, Timothy (Ollie O'Toole) in this wacky story, who drops off his 16 year old son, Duncan (alias Dunky) to stay while he negotiates another BIG business deal.

The interesting thing about Dunky (well played by Bobby Diamond) is that he's just like Dobie --mad about girls. Clarissa (Ahna Capri) catches his eye, but she's not impressed. So what to do?

Dobie suggests he tell a story with a dramatic slant, to get sympathy -- lots of it.

Great idea, except for one thing. Dunky goes overboard and invents a tall tale about Dobie being a hopeless drunk and a gambler! What could be worse. There's a super scene where Clarissa enters the Gillis' kitchen where a makeshift "still" is in FULL operation and she proceeds to wreck the place, pouring all the booze down the sink!

Way funny stuff, written by producer Max Shulman, who put together a clever script. This was the first episode to introduce Dobie's cousin Duncan. Bobby Diamond is perfect, definitely a younger, hip version of Dobie. Bobby later appeared on such shows as MY THREE SONS and LASSIE before getting his law degree and becoming an LA attorney.

Distinguished actress Ahna Capri, who majored in dramatic roles, is over the top as Clarissa, and look for a young Ellen Burstyn in a small part. This was the only episode Ollie O'Toole appeared in, playing Herb's brother. Ollie's career spanned many years, frequently seen on THE VIRGINIAN.

Catch the end where Maynard rolls under a park bench? SEASON 3 remastered.

One of the better episodes in the last season.

A show that deteriorated greatly as the seasons went on. The stories became so silly and dumb that it was amazing that it lasted four seasons. The shows that centered around Maynard became so ridiculous that they are painful to watch. However this episode introduced Duncan to inject a younger cast member that really should have been the age of Hickman when the series began. Hickman was at this point a 30 year old and college stories just really didn't make any sense. They also give Duncan a blonde fiery counterpart, the new Thalia. The later episodes only became better when they were about Dobie, Zelda, a return of Thalia, or his parents who were wonderful in their roles! Of course, after a while Duncan gets on your nerves. The shows fourth season saw a huge ratings drop. Dobie and Maynard were just getting too old and unfortunately at this point Maynard seemed too mentally diasabled and juvenile. There was no place for the show to go.
