'Vampire Diaries'' bartender Sean Faris packs on the muscle

18 December 2009 8:49 AM, PST | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

Sean Faris, who guest stars on The CW's supernatural hit "The Vampire Diaries," might play a mere human on the show, but he's still physically impressive.

Check out the 27-year-old actor's shirtless cover shot of Men's Health magazine for proof.

Faris, who will play the sexy new bartender at the Mystic Grill named Ben when The CW show returns in the new year, packed on 15 pounds of muscle for the mixed martial arts film "Never Back Down" and has maintained his physique for "The Vampire Diaries."

"You don't have to kill yourself," Faris tells the magazine about his workouts. "But when you walk into that weight room, you have to be ready to work."

He goes on to offer fitness tips for lifting weights, but also for the diet. Our favorite bit of food advice? Cheat big.

"If I'm going to cheat, I do it right," he says, revealing that »

Summit Mulling Best Ways to Turn Fourth Twilight Book Into One Billion Twihard Dollars

1 December 2009 9:20 AM, PST | Movieline | See recent Movieline news »

Two weeks and $480 million later, Summit Entertainment -- the small indie studio who prior to Twilight mania was best known for modest filmed entertainments like Never Back Down and Sex Drive -- are now left with a two-headed challenge: one, finding a place to stow that obnoxious amount of New Moon money, and two, figuring out the best way to make even more. The series's third chapter, Eclipse, is already in post-production, where it will eventually receive its finishing coat of vampire glitter and be buffed to a high sheen before rolling off the assembly line this coming June. (Yes, June. It will be a good half-decade before you'll not be hearing which team is up or down in the Northwestern Hunky Monster Conference.) »

Trailer: The King of Fighters

26 November 2009 10:23 AM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Old school video game fans are not going to be happy with this! A trailer for the live-action adaptation of the classic Snk 2D fighting game The King of Fighters has surfaced online and it looks as though it’s a serious contender for the worst video game-to-film adaptation ever made.

Starring Sean Faris (Never Back Down), Maggie Q (Live Free or Die Hard), Will Yun Lee (Elektra), and martial arts expert Ray Park (Darth Maul from Star Wars: The Phantom Menace), The King of Fighters is directed by Gordon Chan, who although was behind the terrible Jackie Chan film The Medallion, also made the much loved Jet Li classic Fist of Legend.

The film’s premise is wildly different from the game it’s based upon. According to Movieset:

The King of Fighters movie will introduce a new science fiction spin into the setting established in the games’ universe »

The King of Fighters Trailer Starring Ray Park and Maggie Q

26 November 2009 7:16 AM, PST | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Hey look, it's another low budget video game adaptation that's got direct-to-dvd written all over it! The King of Fighters is based on a series of fighting games that was first released for the Neo Geo console and in arcades back in the mid-'90s. Since the Neo Geo was the uber-expensive video game system that only rich kids had, I never really got into it, but they're still making new installments today so it's definitely got a following. The movie doesn't seem to be based on the plot of any one particular game, and according to Wikipedia [1], has a sci-fi twist that involves members of three legendary fighting clans who get transported to alternate dimensions where they must fight the inhabitants of each world. This promo trailer, however, doesn't convey much of a plot at all. Gordon Chan (Fist of Legend, The Medallion) is directing the movie, and it »

The King of Fighters Promo Trailer, Starring Ray Park and Maggie Q

25 November 2009 10:46 PM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

This promo trailer for Gordon Chan's upcoming King of Fighters---yes, yet another fighting game film adaptation---is both simultaneously hilarious in its total cheese-factor, and also totally depressing when you remember that this guy directed Fist of Legend. Our friends over at Quiet Earth dug up this trailer, and I agree with them that this looks like the second coming of Corey Yuen's D.O.A: Dead or Alive. That could either be great news, terrible news, or a bit of both. I'm leaning towards the latter. Even as a fan of the Snk King of Fighters video game series that this film is based on, I can barely tell what's going on in this trailer. The film stars Sean Faris (Never Back Down) as Kyo Kusanagi (in the games he was the leader of the Japan team. So, um, yah...), Will Yun Lee (Elektra, Bionic Woman) as Kyo's rival Iori Yagami, »

Korean Gangster Film 'A Dirty Carnival' Getting an English Remake

22 October 2009 3:24 AM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

I love Korean gangster films. While there are filmmakers like Park Chan-wook and Bong Joon-ho, the one film that really opened my eyes was The Chaser, which I saw back in 2008, and is why I'm writing about this one. I don't know anything about A Dirty Carnival, but I dig that title and the plot and will be seeking it out as soon as I can. Variety reports that the 2006 film, written and directed by Yoo Ha, is being remade by Sparkler Entertainment (National Treasure) and Cj Entertainment, the big Korean company behind most of Bong Joon-ho and Park Chan-wook's films. Chris Hauty (Never Back Down) will be writing the script. Here's the basic plot synopsis for A Dirty Carnival: Byung-du is a 29-year-old career criminal, working for the middle-rank enforcer Sang-chul. Burdened with a terminally ill mother and taking care of younger siblings, Byung-du is feeling financial pressure »

Dirty Carnival is the latest Asian remake

22 October 2009 12:24 AM, PDT | TotalFilm | See recent TotalFilm news »

The producers behind National Treasure have bought the rights to remake Korean gangster drama A Dirty Carnival. We doubt it'll keep that name (it sounds more like a perverted circus movie than a crime pic),but it'll likely keep the rough plot intact - a small time debt collector for the triads finds his fortunes rising but his own family swirling into debt. Sparkler Entertainment (which helped bring the world Nicolas Cage's code-cracking adventures) is producing, and has hired Never Back Down writer Chris Hauty to tap out a script....

16 October 2009 11:52 AM, PDT | ScreenStar | See recent ScreenStar news »

Amber Heard has spent the last few years solidifying her career in Hollywood and these days her name is often at the top of every casting director's list. The actress is wanted for her eye-catching looks, professionalism, and her keen acting abilities that have drawn much attention as of late. The native Texan has scored some stellar roles in the past few years; she played Seth Rogen's girlfriend in Pineapple Express, shared the silver screen with Sean Faris in Never Back Down, and has a slew of Hollywood blockbusters waiting to be released. ScreenStar spoke with the actress about her onset chainsaw mishap, working with Penn Badgley, and the excitement surrounding The Stepfather. The stunning Amber Heard has had a very busy year; she had a cameo in the runaway hit Zombieland, wrapped playing Johnny Depp's love interest in The Rum Diary, and this weekend she stars alongside Gossip Girl stud Penn Badgley. »

Amber Heard Dishes on The Stepfather

15 October 2009 10:05 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

The busy young actress talks about her role in the remake and The Rum Diary as well

Amber Heard is easily one of the hottest young actresses out there, in more ways than one. After gaining acclaim for smaller roles in studio films like Friday Night Lights and portraying a young Charlize Theron in North Country and, of course, her lead performance as the title character in the cult horror classic All the Boys Love Mandy Lane, the actress has continued to add to her repertoire. The actress has more recently appeared in such hits as Never Back Down, Pineapple Express and the horror-comedy sensation Zombieland, Heard returns to theaters this weekend with the horror remake The Stepfather, which arrives in theaters on October 16. I met her and spoke with her briefly during my set visit last year, but earlier today I had the chance to speak with Heard exclusively »

Pandorum Review Now Live

Though it's taken a couple of days (thanks to there being no screenings for critics), our review of Overture Films' Pandorum is finally live and kicking! Did it make the cut?

In Pandorum Dennis Quaid (Vantage Point, The Express) and Ben Foster (3:10 to Yuma, Alpha Dog) join Cam Gigandet (Never Back Down, Twilight), Cung Le (Tekken, Fighting), newcomer Antje Traue, and director Christian Alvart (Antibodies) to tell the terrifying story of two crew members stranded on a spacecraft who quickly – and horrifically – realize they are not alone. Two astronauts awaken in a hyper-sleep chamber aboard a seemingly abandoned spacecraft. It’s pitch black, they are disoriented, and the only sound is a low rumble and creak from the belly of the ship. They can’t remember anything: Who are they? What is their mission? With Lt. Payton (Quaid) staying behind to guide him via radio transmitter, Cpl. Bower (Foster »

Conspiracy Theories Alive And Well At CBS Films

25 September 2009 7:59 AM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

It might just be a result of having seen Surrogates, which uses a boring conspiracy plot to ruin a great sci-fi concept, but I've pretty much had it with movies about unraveling large-scale conspiracies or plots of any kind. I realize they're the backbone of every single action film made this decade, but isn't there a way to have an action movie without some kind of secret plot to destroy the world? CBS Films at least has no interest in helping me out here. According to Variety they've picked up the thriller Sleeper Spy, Anthony Jaswinski's script about a plot to assassinate a political figure. Jeff Wadlow, who made the high school fight movie Never Back Down, has signed on to direct. CBS Films president Amy Baer asked for major changes in the storyline when the studio acquired the film, which could mean that they've made it even more generic, »

Sleeper Spy Set For Screen

It's a natural progression from teen fight movie Never Back Down to asssasination thriller, apparently, with the news that director Jeff Wadlow has signed on to Sleeper Spy, a new thriller for CBS Films. All we know about the film is that it centres on an assassination attempt on a political figure. We're going to go ahead and wildly speculate that it's more Shooter and less Day of the Jackal though, but what we're really secretly hoping is that it's a sequel to Never Back Down and the whole assassination attempt isn't through bombing or sharp-shooting but through the medium of mixed martial arts fighting.Anthony Jaswinski, who wrote the upcoming Vanishing on 7th Street (set to star Hayden Christensen, Thandie Newton and John Leguizamo), wrote the script. »
