Storyline

After it looks as if she's left his life for good this time, Tom Hansen reflects back on the just over one year that he knew Summer Finn. For Tom, it was love at first sight when she walked into the greeting card company where he worked, she the new administrative assistant. Soon, Tom knew that Summer was the woman with whom he wanted to spend the rest of his life. Although Summer did not believe in relationships or boyfriends - in her assertion, real life will always ultimately get in the way - Tom and Summer became more than just friends. Through the trials and tribulations of Tom and Summer's so-called relationship, Tom could always count on the advice of his two best friends, McKenzie and Paul. However, it is Tom's adolescent sister, Rachel, who is his voice of reason. After all is said and done, Tom is the one who ultimately has to make the choice to listen or not. Written by Huggo

Goofs

Tom and Rachel are shown playing on a Nintendo Wii game console on day 11. Near the end of the film, the narrator says day 500 is Wednesday, May 23. The last time May 23 was a Wednesday was in 2007. Counting back, this means day 11 would have been January 18, 2006. The Nintendo Wii was not released until November 19, 2006. See more »

Quotes

Paul: So what are you exactly?
Tom: I don't know.
Paul: Are you her boyfriend?
Tom: It's not that simple.
McKenzie: Sure, it is.
Tom: What, like, are we going steady? Come on, guys. You know, we're-we're adults. We know how we feel. We don't need to put labels on it. I mean, "boyfriend," "girlfriend." All that stuff is... it's really juvenile.
McKenzie: You sound gay.
Paul: You really do.
Tom: [points to McKenzie] Okay, first of all, your last girlfriend was Amy Sussman in seventh grade. And you dated for, like, three hours.
[points to Paul]

Summer's Webb
22 July 2009 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

Who is Mark Webb? Anyone? Anyone? It is an astonishing piece of work for a first time feature film director. He counts with a beautifully crafted screenplay and two sensational leading performances and that's where the success of this comedy resides. Jodseph Gordon Levitt and Zooey Deschanel are two startling originals with a winning screen presence and a brain, yes, a brain. I was involved in their peculiar relationship because there isn't a hint of shallowness in their back and fourth. I believe it, completely, and when you sit in the dark and believe what you see on the screen, things are going to happen to you the way that happened to me. It is again a confirmation that treating your audience with respect will pay off somewhere along the line. I love Zooey Deschanel, she reminds me of some my favorites of the past without looking or sounding like anybody else. And Joseph Gordon Levitt, well, this young man is something else. He projects a humanity that doesn't need to be embellished. It's just there for us to dive into. Marvelous actor, marvelous performance, marvelous film. I'm so thrilled to be able to say that.
