The use of a mirror to treat phantom limb pain (shown in this episode) was invented by neurologist V. S. Ramachandran, as described in his article "Touching the phantom limb" in the journal "Nature" (12 October 1995) and his book "Phantoms in the Brain". Dr Ramachandran likes to joke that this was probably the first example in medical history of a successful amputation of a phantom limb. See more
