2010 in Reviews: 60 movies we watched and rated this year!

31 December 2010 8:04 AM, PST | QuietEarth.us | See recent QuietEarth news »

[Editor's note: If anyone says 2010 was a sh!% year for movies, please refer them to this post.]

Instead of the usual "best" or "worst" films of the year lists, I thought a good way to take a look at the highs and lows of the 2010 film year would be to compile almost every single review we published in 2010 and let readers meander through the wasteland as it were.

I'm really amazed at the range of films we managed to cover from around the globe this year. Quiet Earth has certainly come a long way over the years and it's really due to the talents and passion of our team of writers who literally travel a world of fests to bring news and reviews of new films.

I hope you're all taking notes. Many of these films were from fests and will probably be hitting VOD and Blu-ray sometime in the new year, so this is a good chance to get a start on your must-watch lists.

The Notable Films of 2011: Part Four

27 December 2010 9:58 PM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Damsels in Distress

Opens: 2011

Cast: Adam Brody, Analeigh Tipton, Megalyn Echikunwoke, Ryan Metcalf

Director: Whit Stillman

Summary: The story revolves around a group of style-obsessed college girls who take in a new student (Gerwig) and teach her their misguided ways of helping people at their grungy university.

Analysis: The first film in a decade from arthouse darling Whit Stillman, a filmmaker's filmmaker whose three Manhattan-based, yuppie-themed mannerist comedies - "Metropolitan," "Barcelona" and "The Last Days of Disco" - were a big influence on the likes of auteurs such as Wes Anderson and Noah Baumbach. Stillman says this film varies somewhat from his previous trilogy of sorts, telling First Things that "This film is different, Completely different. Okay, not completely different, but it’s different".

Independently financed by Castle Rock CEO Martin Shafer, the project recently wrapped filming in Manhattan where Stillman returned to last year after having spent much »

Owf’s 52 Must See Films of 2011

24 December 2010 11:00 PM, PST | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

Usually around this time of the year we list maybe 10 or 20 films that we think are as absolute ‘Must See’s’ for what the next 12 months of cinema has to offer us but as the clock is ticking ever closer to midnight on 2010, we thought we would challenge ourselves a little further this time around. The question I posed to the Owf staff recently was… can Cinema in 2011 produce enough ‘Must See’ films to hit 52, which would ratio out to be just one film per week? That’s all we are hopeful for here… just one film every Friday that justifies us parting with our ever increasingly important cash in these tough economic times.

Did we manage to find 52? Kind of.

There’s certainly 52 films listed here but once we got to around 30, the whole thing became a struggle and we had to fill it out disappointingly with the usual array of over-budgeted summer spectacles, »

10 Overlooked Films of 2010

21 December 2010 3:46 PM, PST | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

If there is anything that I love doing as a film buff, it is recommending overlooked films.  Films that, for whatever reason, did not get a fair shot in theatres but are worth seeking out.  They may not have played at a lot of places or their runs might have been cut short due to financial reasons.  Whatever the reason is, these are those little buried gems that you want to promote to all your friends.  These ten films, in no particular order, are films that you will not be seeing on most year end lists, with the exception of one film.  However they are all deserve a chance, if not in the theatres, than on DVD.

Directed by Alejandro Amenabar

Movies about ideas rarely get any play in this marketplace so it would have been silly to think that Alejandro Amenabar’s ambitious film would get a wide release. »

Top 10 underrated performances of 2010

20 December 2010 3:17 AM, PST | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

As 2010 draws to a close, we celebrate the year's 10 most underrated performances...

As we head into awards season, the likes of Colin Firth and Helena Bonham Carter are hotly tipped to pick up nominations at the very least, if not actual gongs for their acting in The King's Speech. Christian Bale made a big old physical transformation for The Fighter, as did Natalie Portman for Black Swan. But those two films won't come out until 2011 in the UK, and nor will The King's Speech.

The tendency is to award stuff that comes out at the very end of the year, and so a lot of good performances earlier in the movie calendar are forgotten. Most of these actors didn't undergo gruelling physical transformations or star in the kind of film that Oscar likes to reward. They were just good. Maybe not Oscar good, but they were undervalued, either in reviews »

World Cinema: 10 films you should have seen this year (but probably didn’t)

15 December 2010 8:04 PM, PST | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

In this week’s World Cinema column, Nick lists ten great 2010 films you may have missed...

It's that time of the year again, the time for lists. And having been taking a look at the more obscure side of cinema for the last few months, I thought it only fitting that my own list should give recognition to those films that haven't had the love of the mainstream, the films that deserve far more reward and respect than those given a place in the local multiplex.

It's not the films no-one heard of. It's just the one's no-one really saw. Luckily for me, I'm not the only one who thinks this way.

Joining me in taking a look through the mainly ignored cinematic gems waiting to be mined by you is Who's Jack magazine film editor, Mark Williams. He's a man dedicated to spending his time alternately watching the back »

Peripheral Vision: 'Centurion' Is Myth Made Real

29 November 2010 10:40 PM, PST | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Neil Marshall has got a reputation. The British writer-director of Dog Soldiers, The Descent and Doomsday has been likened to, among others, Eli Roth and Rob Zombie. That's by virtue of being named with them as a member of the so-called Splat Pack.

If you have seen any of their films you'll know that their connection is obvious. Bloody obvious. The gushing red stuff comes in buckets when Roth and Rob Z. are behind the camera and Marshall can clearly stand the sight of it, too. Dog Soldiers and The Descent were fine suspense films but you wouldn't watch them with your granny. Unless, that is, she once worked in an abattoir.

Marshall has followed up those films with the equally bload-soaked Centurion, which was recently released on DVD by eOne. Part Roman epic, part chase film and part sword-and-sandal adventure, Centurion is a thematic departure for the director in »

Exclusive: Neil Marshall and Axelle Carolyn on 'Burst' and 'The Haunted'

25 November 2010 10:00 AM, PST | FEARnet | See recent FEARnet news »

Neil Marshall and his wife, actor Axelle Carolyn, have teamed up on a couple of notable projects, namely Marshall's enormously entertaining (and, in this writer's opinion, criminally underrated) Doomsday and Centurion. But the talented couple is taking their creative relationship to another level with their next film -- which will mark Carolyn's directorial debut and Marshall's first turn as a producer. For the full details, read my recent chat with the duo after the jump. Can you give us the status on your next project? I know you can't say much. Marshall: The only reason I can't say much is because I don't know what is the next project. I'm still working »

Review: Video Nasties: Moral Panic, Censorship, and Video Tape

21 November 2010 7:15 PM, PST | Twitch | See recent Twitch news »

[Fyi, this review will cover the documentary only, the rest of the package will be covered separately]

The early 1980's was a magical time for movie lovers.  The dawn of home video.  Everyone was scooping up $700 VCRs like their lives depended on it.  Thousands upon thousands of films that you'd never had a chance to see either in a theater or at home on television were suddenly at one's fingertips.  This was the same all around the world.  In the UK, something happened in those early years that went on to define the tastes of a generation of horror fans, the advent of the Video Nasty.

I'll assume that most of you, my fair readers, are at least aware of the Video Nasty.  Here is the briefest of descriptions, courtesy of Wikipedia:

"Video nasty" was a term coined in the United Kingdom in the 1980s that originally applied to a number of films distributed on video cassette that were criticized for their violent content by various religious organizations, »

Wow. An offer story that actually turned into a concrete gig. Who knew? Deadline reports that Mike White has formally accepted the director's chair on "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies" after an offer crossed his desk just over a week ago. White beats out a slew of contenders for the job that lined up after David O. Russell left the project including Mike Newell (”Prince Of Persia: The Sands of Time”), Neil Marshall (”Centurion”), David Slade (”The Twilight Saga: Eclipse”), and Jonathan Demme. It's an interesting move for White who is previously only known for writing "Orange County," "School Of… »

Heartless (2009)

Directed by Philip Ridley

Starring Jim Sturgess, Clemence Poesy, Noel Clarke, Joseph Mawle, Eddie Marsan, Luke Treadaway, Timothy Spall

It’s been 14 years since the cult UK director Philip Ridley (The Reflecting Skin, The Passion of Darkly Noon) has made a film. Heartless marks the director’s triumphant return to the screen and fortifies his status as being one of the most visionary directors of our time. Recently winning the Best Independent Film Award at the Toronto After Dark Festival, Heartless is a captivating tale of the darker side of life. A film that takes us places instead of a film that keeps us in our seats. A film that forces us to think and that makes us want to re-watch it immediately after it’s over.

The film follows Jamie Morgan (Sturgess), born with a disfiguring birthmark across his face, which leaves him an outcast in rough East London. »

‘The Eagle’ Trailer: (Arthouse) Swords & Sandals Action

11 November 2010 7:26 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Kevin MacDonald – the man behind the experimental Youtube movie Life In A Day – will see his entry in the Roman swords and sandals epic genre, The Eagle, released in theaters in just a few months.

A trailer for The Eagle is now online and it looks to be a PG-13 version of “Splat Pack” member Neil Marshall’s bloody action film Centurion – one that is more character-driven and features fewer scenes of warriors being decapitated and/or impaled.

The Eagle takes place in the year 140 A.D. and revolves around Marcus Aquila (Channing Tatum), whose father, Flavius, led Rome’s Ninth Legion to its doom some 20 years before. Marcus enlists the aid of his slave, Esca (Jamie Bell) and sets out on a dangerous mission across the highlands of Scotland in order to…

New Trailer and Poster for The Eagle

11 November 2010 7:01 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

A new trailer and poster for The Eagle has been released online. Set in 140 Ad, The Eagle follows centurion Marcus Aquila (Channing Tatum) as he attempts to solve the mysterious disappearance of the entire Ninth Legion in the mountains of Scotland and restore the reputation of his father, the commander of the Ninth. Jamie Bell plays Aquila's British slave Esca, with Donald Sutherland co-starring as Tatum's uncle and Mark Strong as ex-soldier Guern.

The Eagle could be considered a sequel to Neil Marshall's Centurion, which told the story of how the Ninth Legion disappeared, however the movies are unrelated. Based on Rosemary Sutcliff's novel The Eagle of the Ninth, The Eagle was adapted by screenwriter Jeremy Brock and directed by Kevin MacDonald, the creative team behind 2006's The Last King of Scotland.

The Eagle Trailer Starring Channing Tatum

11 November 2010 5:34 AM, PST | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Earlier this year, Neil Marshall released his bloody Roman action epic Centurion, which told the story of the Ninth Legion, a group of Roman soldiers who essentially disappeared after marching to war in northern Scotland around 80 A.D. Now director Kevin MacDonald (The Last King of Scotland) is offering a slightly different take on the same loose historical events with The Eagle, based on the book by Rosemary Sutcliff. The movie stars Channing Tatum as Marcus Aquila, the son of the legion's commander, who sets off on a quest to recover the golden Eagle emblem that the Ninth had carried with them some twenty years earlier. He is accompanied by his slave, Esca (Jamie Bell), who apparently knows more about his father's fate than he lets on. Since MacDonald is co-directing the documentary Life in a Day [1] with Ridley Scott, I kind of thought he might be a producer on this, »
