How to Train Your Dragon 2 movie review: flying higher

An absolute delight, even better than the first film; a gorgeously animated ode to peacemaking, nonconformity, and sticking to your principles in the face of ultimate adversity. I’m “biast” (pro): loved the first film

I’m “biast” (con): absolutely nothing

I have not read the source material

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

The world is bigger on dragonback, as Hiccup — dragon whisperer and heir to the tiny throne of the Viking island village Berk — is discovering, joyfully. And we are there with him in a stunningly animated return to this fantastical realm. How to Train Your Dragon 2 isn’t only a glorious narrative expansion of the people and places we met in the first film, it also represents an astonishing leap in computer animation that makes Hiccup’s world even more touchably real than it was before. It seems like a paradox,

The Top 10 Guest Spots We’d Love To See On TV

By Rachel Bennett

Television Editor & Columnist

***

Last week, it was announced that Patton Oswalt, who hass appeared on such series as CBS’s Two and a Half Men, Fox’s Raising Hope and Showtime’s United States of Tara, will guest star on the upcoming season of FX’s Justified. He will play a former high school classmate of Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant).

Great guest spots are one of my favorite aspects of television. The occurrence can combine an actor and a show that are perfect for one another — even if it’s just temporarily. It can also draw viewers to a show they haven’t checked out yet, possibly giving a struggling series a boost in ratings. Some of my favorite recent moments on series have incorporated fantastic guest stars, including Parker Posey on FX’s Louie and Fox’s New Girl, Giancarlo Esposito on NBC’s Community and

Emma Roberts and AnnaSophia Robb to Star in Anything But Ordinary

Emma Roberts (Scream 4) and AnnaSophia Robb (Soul Surfer) are set to star in the music-driven love story Anything but Ordinary.  According to THR, the film is about "a seventeen-year-old diving phenom who suffers a tragic accident during her final Olympic trials. When she wakes from a coma four years later, as a 21-year old, she is considered a medical miracle. But what no one else knows is that the young woman has become a synesthete, processing words and numbers through color, the third dimension and sound."  So it's like she's on a continual acid trip?  I wonder how many people would trade four years of their life for that.  I hear colors taste great.  Charlie Craig wrote the original story and co-wrote the screenplay with Liz Garcia and Lisa BarrettSanaa Hamri (The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2) is set to direct. Earlier this year, Roberts signed on

'The Help' Bags Solid $5.5M on Wednesday

'The Help' Bags Solid $5.5M on Wednesday
On Wednesday, The Help debuted to an estimated $5.5 million on approximately 3,100 screens at 2,511 locations, claiming first place for the day over Rise of the Planet of the Apes' $4.9 million. It's not unprecedented for a female-driven drama to make a splash in August, especially one based on a popular book. Julie & Julia and Eat Pray Love saw opening weekends of $20.1 million and $23.1 million, respectively, though they had traditional Friday launches. The Help's marketing campaign has been in full swing for weeks, promoting the movie as a feel-good ensemble comedy-drama, but the book's branding has been the star. Three recent younger-skewing female-driven August movies fared better than The Help in their Wednesday launches, though two were sequels and one was a remake. In 2008, The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 had a $5.7 million Wednesday that resulted in a $10.7 million weekend (for $19.6 million in five days). In 2004, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement nabbed an $8.5 million Wednesday,
