"Conta-me como foi" is, in my view, the best show in Portuguese television. We can actually learn something with the story because it's an historical document. It talks about a controversial time in the history of Portugal. It is very important to know that they focus the story in the end of the 60's. Portugal was tired of the dictatorial government of Salazar. There was a war, the political police (PIDE), many exploitations by the rich and we have many references to it in the show. But the story begins when Portugal starts to change, the world itself was changing!
The cast is very well chosen. Miguel Guilherme gives a wonderful interpretation. His character (Antonio) is a good example of honesty and what a life of hard work is. Rita Blanco gives a fantastic performance as Margarida. They have a lot of chemistry. All the family is great and Dona Hermínia, played by Catarina Avelar is really a great character. Rita Brutt, who plays Isabel was a very good surprise. Her acting is quite good and different. We can compare her to a young Rita Blanco.
There is a political side in the plot. There's also a character, played by Ana Guiomar (Lena), who fights for a different Portugal and takes Fernando Pires (Tony) with her. The students weren't passive at all and many of them were arrested by resisting the government. We can actually see a great development in these two characters (Tony and Lena).
But the show is much more than that. It's also a nostalgia and a journey to those times when a kid didn't have computers, video games or internet. Many of them didn't have television either. But, as we can see, "the three musketeers" ( I think Camões called them this name once): Carlitos, Marinho and Luís didn't need anything of those things to have fun. The kids provide great acting and that helps a lot with the story and they attract younger audiences to the show.
There is a mist of drama/ comedy /romance that is very well developed. The plots have a solid structure and and we can notice that the dialogue is suited to 1968/early 70's Portugal. Good script!
The photography is fantastic and quite interesting for a television show. The music is really nostalgic. The sets are so realistic and there are plenty of details ( magazines, old furniture, newspapers, posters and much more!)
All in all, it's a fantastic show and I congratulate the team that is behind this project. "Conta-me como foi" is a show with the greatest quality level.
Many of us learn, others remember...
